This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +1 more state.
• Lead a group of skilled engineers in tackling challenging engineering problems.
• Mentor and support the professional and technical growth of team members.
• Develop career paths and assign projects that align with team members’ skills, work styles, personalities, and ambitions.
• Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and respectful team atmosphere.
• Provide ongoing feedback, address performance issues, and acknowledge individual strengths and contributions.
• Prioritize technical and resource challenges within the broader Engineering organization.
• Drive continuous improvement in code quality, architecture, and processes.
• Expand the team by identifying business needs, addressing skill gaps, and prioritizing a diverse recruitment strategy.
• Maintain a prioritized backlog and set both short-term and long-term objectives with engineers and stakeholders.
• Build relationships across Engineering, Operations, and other relevant stakeholders.
• Influence development practices across teams, including best practices, technology selections, and tech-stack evolution.
• Plan for Pilot’s accelerated growth and scalability.
• Oversee the Infrastructure team responsible for core infrastructure, developer experience, design systems, frontend infrastructure, and security.
• Minimum of two years in a formal managerial role.
• At least one year of experience managing a remote team.
• Proven experience in managing engineers’ performance, including implementing performance corrections and providing continuous feedback.
• Experience in team growth and managing the complete recruiting lifecycle.
• Proficient in technical execution and dependency management.
• Experience in diagnosing and addressing team morale or execution challenges.
• Ability to promote inclusion within a diverse team and support marginalized individuals.
• Experience in building relationships with engineers, peers, customers, or vendors.
• Strong technical background with the ability to engage in technical design discussions.
• Experience in communicating team technology details to others.
• Consideration of AI in engineering workflows and awareness of its risks and drawbacks.
• Prior engineering management experience is preferred/expected, but candidates need not meet every listed requirement.
• Technical proficiency in Python 3.13, JavaScript, TypeScript, Vue.js, Terraform, Docker, ECS, AWS CodeDeploy, Honeycomb, and Postgres as demonstrated through the team’s technology context.
