Assistant Managing Editor

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Lead and oversee a team of data reporters and editors.

• Establish standards for reporting, writing, and production across data-centric series.

• Edit data journalism to ensure accuracy, clarity, fairness, and narrative strength.

• Generate and propose story and series ideas.

• Guide projects from initial concept through to publication, collaborating with reporters, editors, and graphics teams.

• Mentor and enhance the skills of reporters and editors in data literacy and writing.

• Maintain the editorial quality and integrity of the team's output.

• Collaborate with survey and research specialists to guarantee precise, well-sourced reporting.

• Facilitate cross-functional collaboration to ensure timely publication of stories.

• Assist in the development of new data-driven series, identify valuable datasets, and shape surveys and research.

⛳️ Requirements

• 7–10+ years of pertinent experience in a newsroom setting.

• Proven success in data-driven or investigative reporting and editing.

• Established leadership or team management experience within a newsroom environment.

• Keen editorial judgment and robust editing skills, particularly with data-intensive stories.

• Comfort with data of varying quality and completeness.

• Ability to recognize discrepancies in numerical data.

• Excellent communication skills with the capability to convey complex concepts to varied audiences.

• Capacity to work autonomously while effectively collaborating across teams.

• Preferred experience in editing or producing recurring data series or investigative projects.

• Familiarity with R or Python is an advantage.

• Experience with data visualization techniques is preferred.

• Prior experience in legal industry reporting or research is preferred.

• Strong organizational abilities and the capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously is preferred.

• A degree in journalism, public policy, political science, economics, statistics, or a related discipline is preferred.
