Assistant Managing Editor

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Oversee and direct a team of data reporters and editors.

• Establish benchmarks for reporting, writing, and production within data-centric series.

• Review data journalism for precision, clarity, impartiality, and narrative impact.

• Generate and propose story and series concepts.

• Lead projects from initial idea to publication alongside reporters, editors, and graphics teams.

• Mentor and enhance the data skills and writing abilities of reporters and editors.

• Ensure the editorial quality and integrity of the team's work.

• Collaborate with survey and research experts to guarantee accurate, well-sourced, and clearly articulated reporting.

• Facilitate cross-departmental cooperation to ensure timely publication of stories that meet high standards.

• Assist in developing new data-driven series, identifying valuable datasets, and guiding relevant surveys and research.

⛳️ Requirements

• 7-10+ years of pertinent newsroom experience.

• Proven success in data-driven or investigative reporting and editing.

• Established leadership or team management experience within a newsroom setting.

• Keen editorial insight and strong editing abilities, particularly with data-intensive stories.

• Comfortable working with data that varies in quality and completeness.

• Capable of identifying inconsistencies in numerical results.

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.

• Able to work autonomously while effectively collaborating with various teams.

• Experience in editing or producing ongoing data series or investigative projects is advantageous.

• Familiarity with data analysis tools such as R or Python is a plus.

• Experience with data visualization methods is preferred.

• Background in legal industry reporting or research is a plus.

• Strong organizational skills and capacity to manage multiple projects at once is preferred.

• A degree in journalism, public policy, political science, economics, statistics, or a related field is preferred.
