This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Tennessee.
• Architect, design, and develop web applications and tailored software solutions that align with university goals.
• Take ownership of both front-end and back-end development as well as systems integration.
• Update and enhance the university’s WordPress platform.
• Create custom WordPress solutions, which include page builder modules, theme templates, and third-party integrations.
• Design and optimize database schemas, queries, and data processing methodologies.
• Integrate external software libraries, APIs, AI platforms, and various third-party services.
• Maintain and enhance legacy PHP/MySQL applications and WordPress codebases while planning for migrations.
• Diagnose application defects, security flaws, and performance challenges.
• Lead the implementation of AI-assisted development practices, coding tools, workflow automation, and emerging technologies.
• Design and create intelligent search functionalities, chat interfaces, and automated workflows.
• Oversee a small team, assign tasks, establish priorities, provide constructive feedback, and foster professional development.
• Offer technical mentorship and conduct code reviews.
• Coordinate with external development vendors.
• Engage in hiring and onboarding processes.
• Act as a technical liaison to central IT and spearhead website migrations.
• Collaborate with UX/UI designers, product stakeholders, and cross-functional teams.
• Provide advanced technical support and consultation as the escalation point for intricate web application issues.
• Document system architecture, technical specifications, and operational procedures.
• Support strategic initiatives, special projects, and departmental planning efforts.
• A Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience is required.
• At least five years of professional full stack web development experience.
• Extensive back-end experience with PHP/MySQL.
• Front-end expertise with HTML/CSS/JavaScript and associated frameworks/libraries.
• Profound experience in WordPress development, including custom themes, plugins, and the WordPress REST API.
• Proficiency in modern JavaScript, including familiarity with at least one framework such as React.
• Experience in consuming APIs from decoupled front ends.
• Proven experience in integrating third-party APIs and services into web applications.
• Solid understanding of web application security, performance enhancement, and accessibility standards.
• Demonstrated leadership or mentoring experience with developers.
• Capability to manage multiple deadline-driven projects independently while navigating competing priorities.
• Outstanding communication and collaboration skills across both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience in implementing headless or decoupled WordPress architectures and tools.
• Practical experience with AI development tools, schema, JSON-LD, and creating AI-powered application features.
• Experience in a shared services environment where IT infrastructure is managed by a central organization.
• Familiarity with the higher education sector or similarly complex, multi-stakeholder organizations.
