Traffic Count Technician

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Tennessee.

📋 Description

• Organize, schedule, and execute traffic-count data collection across designated counties in Tennessee utilizing TDOT technology and equipment.

• Visit count locations to evaluate site, traffic, weather, and roadway conditions.

• Modify schedules, start times, or locations to ensure safety and gather accurate data.

• Prepare, set up, deploy, monitor, inspect, and troubleshoot traffic counters and pneumatic tubes.

• Download, review, analyze, and upload traffic-count data on a weekly basis.

• Report daily progress using TDOT’s data collection application.

• Generate weekly reports detailing completed counts, issues, schedule modifications, and the work plan for the upcoming week.

• Respond to requests from the TDOT Data Office and arrange for recounts as needed.

• Maintain, inspect, test, and troubleshoot traffic-counting equipment.

• Track equipment inventory and manage repairs, replacements, and supplies.

• Inspect and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE), safety devices, and the assigned vehicle.

• Perform manual turning-movement counts and deploy traffic cameras as required.

• Choose observation or camera locations, configure equipment, document site issues, and submit count data.

• Collaborate with TDOT and CTR personnel.

• Assist in training and mentoring new technicians, sharing best practices.

⛳️ Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent GED.

• At least two years of full-time work experience or equivalent.

• Ability to comprehend and follow both verbal and written instructions.

• Capability to identify potential hazards and implement appropriate precautions.

• Proficient in using computers and standard software/tools for data entry, file management, and communications.

• Familiarity with Windows, iPadOS, Microsoft Office, and browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

• Skilled in maintaining precise activity logs and basic reports/forms.

• Ability to read maps and navigate effectively to assigned count locations.

• Capacity to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions.

• Commitment to adhering to safety protocols while working in or near roadways.

• Ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.

• Strong communication skills to build and maintain productive relationships with stakeholders.

• Willingness to travel daily, including frequent overnight trips.
