This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.
• Review and refine HHS written content to align with federal plain-language standards utilizing FWI plain-language software.
• Edit, proofread, and provide consultation on reports, memos, emails, graphics, figures, charts, social media content, business and technical documents, as well as educational materials.
• Edit, proofread, and format contract deliverables, which include materials for English literacy promotion, community outreach, meeting agendas, annual and final reports.
• Participate in project status update meetings at least biweekly, engage in discussions, and document meeting minutes.
• Implement revisions requested by HHS OMH within set deadlines.
• Create accessible English-language content suitable for digital, broadcast, and print media.
• Develop plain-language English communications tailored for audiences with limited English literacy.
• Produce materials at an appropriate reading level, generally targeting sixth to eighth grade.
• Employ clear structure, active voice, familiar vocabulary, concise sentences, and visual aids as needed.
• Follow federal plain-language guidelines and HHS health literacy best practices.
• Maintain accuracy, cultural relevance, accessibility, and health literacy standards for diverse LEP communities.
• Create communications that enhance awareness and access to HHS programs and health priorities among LEP communities.
• Manage various editing tasks in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
• Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, or a related field.
• A minimum of four years of experience as a Technical Writer/Editor or in a communications or public affairs office, ideally within a federal government setting.
• At least four years of experience in editing, proofreading, and formatting documents using Microsoft Word.
• A minimum of four years of experience in producing publication-ready documents with Adobe Acrobat.
• Must be highly responsive, responsible, and capable of completing tasks promptly in a deadline-driven environment.
• Eligibility for an HHS Public Trust security clearance is required.
• Intermediate to advanced skills in 508 compliance with Microsoft 365 and/or Adobe Acrobat software are preferred.
• Experience in federal government, government contracting, or public health is advantageous but not mandatory.
