This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• Oversee the personnel, delivery, and technical strategy of the Chronicle engineering team
• Convert business and customer requirements into actionable engineering priorities and results
• Collaborate with Product to determine roadmap priorities and break down epics into individual tasks
• Evaluate designs and code, assist with complex technical tasks, resolve obstacles, and help manage production incidents
• Act as the direct line manager for assigned engineers, overseeing their daily employee experience
• Set expectations, objectives, accountability, development plans, and conduct performance reviews
• Mentor and develop team members while addressing performance issues in collaboration with HR
• Monitor workload, engagement, wellbeing, and team dynamics
• Take ownership of delivery commitments and develop realistic plans considering priorities, capacity, dependencies, technical debt, and risks
• Facilitate planning, prioritization, and execution while ensuring clear ownership
• Communicate status updates, risks, trade-offs, and changes to Product and leadership
• Enhance engineering practices for estimation, documentation, testing, code review, release management, incident response, and continuous improvement
• Direct architecture, system design, and implementation decisions
• Uphold standards for secure, reliable, maintainable, documented, testable, and observable software
• Assist engineers in evaluating trade-offs related to reliability, performance, scale, security, delivery speed, and maintainability
• Ensure accountability for production systems, operational issues, incidents, defects, and technical debt
• Aid in incident response and follow up on significant technical or customer-related issues
• Engage in customer discussions and investigate intricate customer escalations
• Foster effective cross-functional relationships and communicate technical matters to non-technical stakeholders
• Proven experience leading software engineers, including coaching, providing feedback, and managing performance
• Strong technical credibility acquired through hands-on software engineering experience
• Proven track record in delivering enterprise software or complex SaaS products
• Proficient in Python, or possess deep expertise in Java or C# combined
• Experience with distributed systems, handling large data volumes, concurrency, scaling, APIs, and complex technical challenges
• Familiarity with AWS or Google Cloud Platform
• Experience with Agile or Kanban methodologies, continuous deployment, and modern deployment tools
• Sound judgment, self-awareness, and a consistent approach to accountability and employee support
• Ability to balance leadership of people, technical direction, client needs, and delivery expectations
• Experience with NoSQL technologies like Cassandra or CouchDB
• Proficient in Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or other search technologies
• Familiarity with React or a similar frontend framework
• Experience in supporting security, compliance, or data governance products
• Background in leading teams through technical modernization, operational improvements, or scaling challenges
• Experience working with legal technology, enterprise data, or digital preservation systems
