This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Take charge of the direct tax domain, which encompasses income tax provision, corporate compliance, deferred tax attribute tracking, corporate tax forecasting, and technical positions.
• Prepare or review monthly, quarterly, and annual income tax provisions that include current and deferred tax, effective tax rate reconciliations, provision-to-return true-ups, and tax account reconciliations.
• Establish the technical review standards for direct tax and design workpapers, registers, and review workflows, incorporating AI and automation where applicable.
• Analyze and document intricate tax positions involving deferred tax assets, tax attributes, loss pools, entity changes, EIFEL restrictions, and uncertain treatments in accordance with IFRIC 23.
• Review T2 and provincial corporate income tax returns, instalments, elections, and information returns for the entire entity group.
• Manage the compliance calendar and ensure timely follow-through on return and notice-of-assessment true-ups.
• Investigate and resolve discrepancies related to assessments and refunds with tax authorities and internal tax function areas.
• Guarantee that tax return working papers are audit-ready, supported by clear substantiation and source documents.
• Create and maintain entity-level tax memos that link business operations, tax adjustments, and treatments to relevant sections of the Income Tax Act or Regulations.
• Lead support for direct tax audits, which includes maintaining standing files, preparing authority-requested schedules, and providing technical responses to the CRA and Revenu Québec.
• Ensure timely filing of special tax elections and waivers, with appropriate evidence retained.
• Provide guidance to the business on direct tax implications of transactions, entity changes, and reorganizations.
• Monitor internal business changes along with external tax legislation and CRA administrative positions.
• CPA designation with extensive knowledge of Canadian corporate income tax.
• Practical experience in income tax provision under IFRS and IAS 12, covering current and deferred tax, effective tax rate reconciliation, tax forecasting, and provision-to-return true-ups.
• Sound judgment in recognizing and assessing the recoverability of deferred tax assets.
• Familiarity with tax attributes and loss pools.
• Experience in T2 and provincial corporate income tax compliance within a multi-entity group.
• Proven track record of reviewing work produced by others, drafting and resolving review notes, and assessing readiness for release.
• Capability to articulate tax issues, arrive at defensible positions, document the rationale, and communicate conclusions to non-tax professionals.
• An In-Depth Tax Program or equivalent Canadian tax specialization is advantageous.
• Experience with CRA or provincial audits and related correspondence is a plus.
• Experience in directing external tax advisors is beneficial.
• Background in financial services, fintech, or another regulated multi-entity environment is desirable.
• Familiarity with Taxprep, NetSuite, Taxnet Pro, or similar tools is a plus.
• Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
