Sustainability Manager – Assurance

📋 Description

• Oversee the daily operations of the GHG/ESG assurance function and implement departmental strategies.

• Develop, sustain, and enhance assurance methodologies, templates, workpapers, review protocols, record-retention practices, and quality-control checkpoints.

• Organize the engagement portfolio, allocate resources based on expertise and independence, oversee capacity, and identify risks related to delivery, quality, budget, or clients.

• Establish and track program metrics such as on-time delivery, budget performance, review outcomes, rework, client feedback, staff utilization, and the closure of corrective actions.

• Direct and evaluate GHG and ESG assurance engagements from discovery and proposal creation through planning, fieldwork, reporting, and closure.

• Define project scope, estimate efforts, create work plans and budgets, identify necessary expertise, and document engagement parameters, boundaries, assurance levels, materiality, and deliverables.

• Analyze GHG emissions sources, calculation methods, emission factors, estimates, data controls, evidence, consolidation strategies, and reporting boundaries across Scope 1, Scope 2, and pertinent Scope 3 categories.

• Evaluate ESG metrics, management assertions, reporting processes, data lineage, internal controls, reporting criteria, and client commitments.

• Conduct or oversee interviews, walkthroughs, analytical procedures, recalculations, sampling, source-document reviews, control testing, and site or system-level validations.

• Assess workpapers and client-ready deliverables for accuracy, completeness, traceability, consistency, and clarity in communication of findings and conclusions.

• Prepare, review, and, when authorized, approve or sign assurance statements.

• Mentor individual contributors by setting expectations, assigning tasks, providing feedback, coaching, and supporting professional growth.

• Enhance team capabilities through training, supervised practice, qualification pathways, and quality assessments.

• Establish trusted relationships with senior client stakeholders and facilitate discussions on discovery, planning, status, issue resolution, and project closure.

• Contribute to proposals, statements of work, pricing assumptions, presentations, and solution development efforts.

• Collaborate with sustainability, energy, engineering, procurement, data, and compliance teams.

• Document decisions, assumptions, limitations, dependencies, and scope modifications; manage client information requests.

• Utilize lessons learned to enhance delivery methods, tools, training materials, and service offerings.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, environmental science, engineering, accounting, business, data analytics, public policy, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.

• Four to seven years of progressive experience in sustainability, climate, environmental, ESG, GHG accounting, audit, verification, or assurance services, including experience in leading projects or workstreams.

• Current Lead Certified Sustainability Assurance Practitioner (LCSAP) or Practicing Certified Sustainability Assurance Practitioner (PCSAP) credential under AccountAbility’s AA1000 program, or an equivalent Lead or Practicing certified practitioner credential under the applicable ISSA standard.

• Proven experience in conducting and reviewing audit, verification, or assurance activities and producing defensible, client-ready workpapers and reports.

• Familiarity with GHG accounting principles and the GHG Protocol, including Scope 1, Scope 2, and relevant Scope 3 inventories, boundaries, calculation methodologies, emission factors, data quality, and controls.

• Capacity to manage personnel, multiple engagements, priorities, schedules, budgets, quality standards, and risks in a dynamic virtual environment.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, including the capacity to work with incomplete information and document assumptions and limitations.

• Exceptional written, verbal, facilitation, and presentation skills.

• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, collaborative cloud-based work environments, and data-management or visualization tools.

• High integrity, sound professional judgment, confidentiality, attention to detail, and a commitment to independence and ethical conduct.

• Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future sponsorship.
