Substation Physical Project Designer – Grid

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Collaborate within a project team alongside engineers and other designers focusing on high and extra high voltage substation design.

• Prepare and conduct thorough reviews of substation general arrangements, electrical equipment plans, electrical section views/elevations, detailed bills of material, lightning stroke shielding plans, grounding plans, conduit/electrical connection/grounding details, below-grade conduit/raceway plans, and control building equipment/cable tray/lighting/grounding plans and sections.

• Conduct technical reviews of project-team feedback on vendor design deliverables to ensure specification compliance.

• Coordinate the integration of comments and consolidate as well as resolve feedback from the project team.

• Lead field walkdowns and collect data at client facilities.

• Engage with clients and contractors to address walkdown concerns.

• Perform constructability walkdowns in collaboration with clients and contractors.

• Identify relevant codes and standards, providing guidance on their application.

• Contribute to the development of improvements to company standards, processes, and quality systems.

• Ensure that designs adhere to codes, standards, and client specifications.

• Mentor designers, drafters, and project stakeholders in design/drafting and client-specific tools.

• Review and oversee the production of design deliverables.

• Offer technical guidance on calculations and prepare as well as review calculations independently.

• Create cost-effective design strategies.

• Collaborate with other disciplines to gather design inputs and ensure the adequacy of integrated design.

• Execute work-plan requirements within budget and schedule constraints.

• Guide the project team in achieving budgetary and scheduling goals.

• Delegate tasks and oversee the technical work of assigned staff.

• Provide performance feedback as a primary evaluator and engage in performance and personnel discussions.

• Supervise routine day-to-day performance and personnel matters within the assigned group.

⛳️ Requirements

• An Associate's Degree in Drafting or equivalent technical experience.

• 15 or more years of experience in substation physical design.

• Advanced proficiency in computer drafting tools (e.g., AutoCAD and/or MicroStation).

• Capability to visualize equipment details, phase-to-ground, and phase-to-phase clearances.

• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

• Skill in visualizing parts in 3D without computer assistance.

• Familiarity with Bentley Substation, Inventor SDS, and BlueBeam.

• Knowledge of ground-based Lidar and converting point cloud data to vector formats.

• Understanding of design techniques, tools, and principles utilized in the production of technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.

• Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology, including the ability to relate various equipment to technical design.
