
State & Local Tax Manager – Income Tax & Residency

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.
• Provide guidance to high-net-worth individuals regarding matters of state residency and domicile, including changes in residency, tax consequences, and necessary documentation.
• Oversee and manage state residency and individual income tax audits, as well as related controversies.
• Address information document requests, formulate factual and technical positions, draft correspondence and protests, and engage with state tax authorities.
• Offer advice to clients on multistate individual income tax issues, including income sourcing, compensation, liquidity events, business transactions, asset sales, and tax credits.
• Act as a resource for SALT within the Private Wealth practice and collaborate with specialists in federal, estate and gift, trust, business tax, and other areas.
• Investigate complex state tax issues and keep abreast of legislative and regulatory changes.
• Contribute to the creation of technical memoranda, client communications, articles, presentations, webinars, and thought leadership initiatives.
• Assist in business development through client and referral relationships, proposals, presentations, and exploring new opportunities.
• Maintain communication with clients, manage their expectations, and deliver outstanding client service.
• Oversee consulting and controversy projects, including scope, staffing, scheduling, budgets, billing, collections, deadlines, and overall engagement economics.
• Review and mentor associates and senior associates, offering technical feedback and support for professional growth.
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline is mandatory.
• CPA, CMI, or JD/LLM certification is required.
• At least three (3) years of experience in state and local tax, individual taxation, tax controversy, or a similar area.
• Experience working with high-net-worth individuals, business owners, executives, family offices, or similar private clientele is highly preferred.
• Strong understanding of state individual income tax principles, especially regarding residency and domicile, statutory residency, income sourcing, and credits for taxes paid to other states.
• Preference for candidates with experience in state tax audits and controversy matters, particularly related to residency or individual income tax examinations.
• Excellent analytical, research, writing, and verbal communication skills.
• Capability to effectively collaborate across tax and advisory practices while leading teams and managing multiple projects.
• Experience in reviewing the work of associates and/or senior associates, providing coaching and technical insight.
• Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
