Staff Systems Engineer, Infrastructure

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Michigan.

📋 Description

• Provide technical guidance across compute, storage, networking, Linux, Windows, and Kubernetes platforms.

• Design and develop infrastructure solutions on an enterprise scale.

• Identify systemic challenges, streamline complex systems, and minimize operational burdens through automation.

• Establish and promote Infrastructure as Code standards.

• Assess and integrate AI-driven tools and agent-based workflows for infrastructure operations.

• Collaborate with Infrastructure, Cloud, Security, and Application teams to deliver comprehensive data center and cloud solutions.

• Conduct impact assessments for intricate changes and recognize cross-system risks.

• Act as a senior escalation point, lead root cause analyses, and implement corrective measures.

• Define, document, and disseminate engineering standards, reference architectures, and best practices.

• Mentor engineers through coaching, design evaluations, and knowledge sharing.

• Shape infrastructure and platform roadmaps along with long-term strategies.

• Engage in incident response, disaster recovery planning, and participate in on-call rotations.

• Communicate technical design choices and reference architectures with Infrastructure leadership.

• Enhance reliability, scalability, and delivery speed through quantifiable platform enhancements and automation.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

• Over 10 years of experience in infrastructure engineering positions.

• Extensive hands-on expertise in compute, virtualization, and storage platforms.

• Proficient in designing, operating, and troubleshooting enterprise-grade compute and virtualization environments.

• Experience leading substantial migrations from on-premises data centers to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

• Knowledge of block storage, file and scale-out NAS, and object storage architectures.

• Experience in designing and managing enterprise-grade file services for remote workforces.

• Hands-on experience with Pure Storage, Cohesity, Qumulo, or similar enterprise solutions.

• Advanced skills in Infrastructure as Code and automation using Terraform, Ansible, PowerShell, Python, Git, or similar tools.

• Experience in designing reusable modules, workflows, and automation patterns.

• Strong understanding of networking fundamentals.

• Experience in designing and managing infrastructure within virtualized and/or hybrid environments.

• Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation and lead critical infrastructure incident responses.

• Required degrees must be from accredited institutions recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent.

• Preferred: experience in hybrid data center and cloud environments; AI-assisted operations; configuration management; Kubernetes; observability and monitoring; disaster recovery; platform strategy; VMware and alternative virtualization solutions.

• Ability to tackle ambiguous, high-impact challenges and implement sustainable, documented solutions.

• Experience functioning as a technical leader across teams without direct authority.

• Strong troubleshooting abilities across various infrastructure layers.

• Interest in contemporary automation techniques, including AI-assisted or agent-based methods.
