Staff Software Engineer, Web Application Services

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the technical architecture for new Services products, managing intricate projects and enhancing evolving systems.

• Develop code, create prototypes and experiments, and engage in planning, testing, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance tasks.

• Define software patterns and make technological decisions for Services products.

• Create and enhance analytics and infrastructure using user-generated data to guide decision-making.

• Address ambiguous, high-impact challenges, including increasing users and subscribers.

• Offer technical and product guidance across Thunderbird and work alongside Mozilla and community contributors.

• Collaborate with the team and community to identify issues, refine concepts, and devise practical solutions.

• Strategize improvements that enhance system and process accessibility, self-service capabilities, reduce friction, promote sustainability, scalability, and ease of delegation.

• Guide engineers through code reviews, documentation, technical discussions, process enhancements, and mentorship.

• Stay up-to-date with technologies, coding standards, libraries, and frameworks.

• Work in conjunction with designers, engineers, cross-functional teams, and open-source contributors to develop privacy-respecting products beyond email.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of web software development experience, including designing scalable and efficient systems and launching intricate web projects at scale.

• Proficient in JavaScript and knowledgeable in at least one additional programming language, such as Python, Rust, Go, or C++.

• Comprehension of the business landscape and experience collaborating with teams to grow Thunderbird’s user and donor base.

• Experience with front-end frameworks, full-stack development, and/or API development.

• Strong understanding of software development practices, including testing, code reviews, and documentation.

• Proven experience as a technical lead, solving complex technical issues, and mentoring and guiding fellow engineers.

• Experience working remotely with teams across engineering, product management, QA, and design.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English along with strong documentation capabilities.

• Comfort in an open-source environment and dedication to Mozilla's values.

• Ability to learn, assess, and responsibly utilize emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools.

• Commitment to continuous learning and staying abreast of industry trends and technologies.

• Willingness to travel periodically, including internationally.
