Staff Software Engineer, Web Application Services

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Take the lead on the technical architecture for new Services products and manage complex projects.

• Develop code, create prototypes and experiments, and engage in planning, testing, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance activities.

• Define software patterns and make key technical decisions, including recommending technology options.

• Construct and enhance analytics and infrastructure leveraging user-generated data for informed decision-making.

• Address ambiguous, high-impact challenges that align with Services objectives, users, and subscribers.

• Provide technical and product leadership within Thunderbird and collaborate with Mozilla and community contributors.

• Work closely with the team and community to identify issues, refine concepts, and create viable solutions.

• Strategize enhancements to make systems and processes more accessible, self-serviceable, sustainable, scalable, and easier to delegate.

• Guide engineers through code reviews, documentation, technical discussions, process enhancements, and mentorship.

• Keep abreast of technologies, coding standards, libraries, and frameworks.

• Support the development of scalable software patterns and architecture across Web Services products.

• Collaborate with leadership and cross-functional teams to make data-informed product decisions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in web software development, focusing on designing scalable and efficient systems and launching complex web projects at scale.

• Proficient in JavaScript and knowledgeable in at least one additional programming language, such as Python, Rust, Go, or C++.

• Familiarity with the business landscape and experience partnering with teams to grow Thunderbird’s user and donor base.

• Experience with front-end frameworks, full-stack development, and/or API development.

• Strong understanding of software development practices, including testing, code review, and documentation.

• Proven experience serving as a technical lead, tackling intricate technical challenges, and mentoring fellow engineers.

• Experience working collaboratively in remote settings across engineering, product management, QA, and design teams.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, along with strong documentation abilities.

• Comfort in an open-source environment and a commitment to Mozilla’s values.

• Ability to learn, evaluate, and responsibly utilize emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools.

• Dedication to continuous learning and staying updated with industry trends and technologies.

• Willingness and ability to travel periodically, including internationally.

• Experience in product management or product-focused roles is a plus.
