Staff Software Engineer, Backend

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North America.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the technical vision for a fundamental backend system, encompassing architecture, reliability, performance, and strategic planning.

• Develop and execute solutions for intricate distributed systems, storage engines, streaming pipelines, or edge infrastructure challenges.

• Lead performance engineering initiatives through profiling, benchmarking, and optimizing latency and throughput.

• Establish standards for operational excellence, observability, incident response, and streamlined, secure operations.

• Collaborate with founders and engineering leadership to shape the long-term technical strategy.

• Guide senior and mid-level engineers, foster technical consensus, and exert influence without formal authority.

• Identify and address complex, ambiguous challenges that span multiple systems.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in backend engineering.

• Proven success in building large-scale, production-quality systems.

• Profound systems-level expertise.

• Proficient in Rust or a comparable systems programming language, such as C++ or Go.

• Capability to take ownership and advance complex systems from architecture through to production operations.

• Experience in leading ambiguous, cross-functional technical initiatives and seeing them through to completion.

• Background in performance engineering, including profiling critical paths, diagnosing root causes, and addressing issues at the code level.

• High sense of ownership and ability to excel in fast-paced environments.

• Prior experience in engineering cultures that emphasize operational excellence, performance, and customer reliability at scale.

• Experience in distributed storage, streaming infrastructure, edge networking, or query engines is preferred.

• Familiarity with operating systems at a petabyte scale or within microsecond latency constraints is preferred.

• Previous on-call responsibility for mission-critical production services is preferred.

• Interest in Solana, blockchain infrastructure, or real-time financial systems is a plus.

• Contributions to open source projects or technical writing are preferred.

• A mix of experiences in both large and small companies is strongly preferred.
