Staff Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in France.

📋 Description

• Collaborate with other Staff Engineers to define and uphold the target architecture of the platform.

• Transform the target architecture into a well-defined and actionable technical roadmap.

• Identify potential technical challenges for the upcoming 6 to 12 months and make design choices to mitigate them.

• Frame intricate system-level subjects, including data models, service boundaries, event flows, and external integrations.

• Clearly articulate technical trade-offs for Product and Engineering leadership.

• Develop code for shared libraries, core services, migrations, and work on performance and reliability across squads.

• Assist squads with challenging technical issues and address production incidents.

• Set standards for testing, observability, and deployment practices.

• Eliminate unnecessary technical complexity.

• Provide mentorship to senior and mid-level engineers.

• Lead the backend community alongside chapter leads through design reviews, tech talks, workshops, guidelines, and documentation.

• Represent JobTeaser engineering at meetups, in articles, or within open-source projects.

• Collaborate with the Head of Engineering and Engineering Managers to organize technical work and staff cross-functional initiatives.

• Achieve a balance between technical investment and product demands.

• Communicate and uphold technical decisions once they are made.

• Take ownership of cross-functional topics without a designated owner.

• Streamline the technology stack, practices, and tools within the microservice architecture.

• Lead architectural explorations for sophisticated features and integrations.

• Ensure that architectural decisions and practices are well-documented.

• Foster engagement within the backend and frontend developer community.

• Guide improvements in monitoring, alerting, and platform reliability.

• Mentor and support backend developers and teams facing complex challenges.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 8 years in software engineering as a benchmark.

• Significant experience in a transverse or leadership role across multiple teams, such as Staff, Principal, Lead, or equivalent.

• Background in a product-driven company, such as a SaaS, marketplace, or platform.

• Strong backend development skills in Ruby or another backend ecosystem.

• Experience with distributed systems.

• Familiarity with relational databases.

• Knowledge of Kafka.

• Experience with REST and gRPC APIs.

• Proficiency in cloud infrastructure, particularly with AWS and Kubernetes.

• Experience in building and managing business-critical systems at scale.

• Proven track record in leading significant migrations or architectural transitions across various teams.

• Demonstrable improvements in system stability, performance, or scalability.

• Ability to align engineers, managers, and product personnel without hierarchical authority.

• Capability to connect technical decisions to user and business outcomes.

• Skill in simplifying complex topics in writing and conversation.

• Experience utilizing LLMs and agents for personal projects or in deployed solutions.
