Staff Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Spain.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and manage backend services for Aave App, focusing on onboarding, funding, savings, withdrawals, portfolio data, and customer communication.

• Create transaction orchestration and indexing services that securely prepare, submit, monitor, and reconcile on-chain activities throughout their entire lifecycle.

• Integrate with smart contracts, RPC providers, account systems, payment partners, and other external services, ensuring design resilience against degraded dependencies and partial failures.

• Lead technical evaluations for high-impact systems.

• Enhance testing, observability, alerting, incident response, and deployment practices within the backend codebase.

• Collaborate closely with mobile, web, product, design, protocol, security, data, and operations teams to provide cohesive consumer experiences.

• Elevate engineering standards through hands-on delivery, pragmatic architecture, comprehensive documentation, and reviews that foster growth among fellow engineers.

• Assume ownership of a wide technical domain, translating ambiguous product objectives into dependable production systems.

• Develop services that facilitate customer transactions, manage sensitive account processes, and handle financial data across both on-chain and off-chain infrastructures.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 6 years of backend engineering experience, including the management of complex production systems.

• Proficient backend programming skills.

• Production experience with Rust is highly preferred; substantial systems experience in Go, C++, or Java will also be considered.

• Expertise in building distributed, event-driven, or data-intensive systems with defined reliability and performance standards.

• Strong understanding of API/GraphQL design principles.

• Familiarity with PostgreSQL or other relational databases.

• Knowledge of caching mechanisms, queues, and observability practices.

• Experience with blockchain technologies, particularly in transaction signing, private-key management, wallet infrastructure, and on-chain transaction lifecycles, is highly desirable.

• Strong judgment regarding threat modeling, handling sensitive data, permissions, and operational risks associated with systems managing financial assets.

• Nice to have: experience with EVM-compatible networks, smart accounts, account abstraction, bridges, or DeFi protocols.

• Nice to have: experience in developing consumer fintech, savings, wallet, exchange, or payments products at scale.

• Nice to have: experience with cross-chain indexing, large-scale data ingestion, Kafka, ClickHouse, or similar infrastructure.
