Software Engineer – Backend

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the technical roadmap for backend services, including reporting, data access, scheduled processing, and export/delivery.

• Lead architectural decisions across various interdependent services and data sources, ensuring thorough documentation for the team.

• Establish and uphold engineering standards, including code quality, testing practices, API design conventions, and observability.

• Evaluate designs and code from fellow engineers, and assist them in overcoming challenging technical issues.

• Transform vague requirements into a detailed technical plan that the team can effectively implement.

• Balance immediate delivery demands with long-term technical integrity; proactively identify and manage technical debt.

• Collaborate directly with product management, QA, and other engineering teams to synchronize on scope, sequencing, and dependencies.

• Lead and suggest ideas/solutions during cross-team architectural discussions and vendor/platform assessments.

• Mentor team engineers and enhance their technical judgment, not just their task completion.

• Contribute code, particularly for the most complex or high-risk problems.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 12 years of experience in building and managing production backend systems, showcasing technical leadership (formal or informal).

• Proficient hands-on experience with a modern backend language and framework (e.g., Java/Spring, Kotlin, C#/.NET, Node.js, Python, or Go).

• Proven history of making and owning architectural decisions across multiple services, rather than just within a single service.

• Strong relational database expertise (schema design, migrations, query performance) at a systems-design level.

• Experience in designing REST APIs and service contracts that are utilized by other teams.

• Familiarity with cloud platforms, preferably GCP.

• Solid understanding of authentication/authorization patterns and security considerations in distributed systems.

• Experience in coordinating work and dependencies across multiple engineers and services.

• Proficient in CI/CD pipelines and containerization, with a focus on enhancing pipeline health and delivery speed.

• Strong background in creating scalable, distributed applications and platforms.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; adept at presenting trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Experience integrating with BI/analytics or data warehouse platforms.

• Background in regulated or audit-sensitive fields (healthcare, finance, insurance) where data lineage and accuracy are critical.

• Experience leading a system through migration or significant architectural changes.

• Proficient in designing asynchronous or scheduled processing for substantial data volumes.

• Experience in establishing role-based access control and data visibility enforcement at a systems-design level.

• Experience mentoring engineers and facilitating technical planning (grooming, estimation, design reviews).

• Familiarity with distributed caching or session/token storage solutions.

• Sufficient frontend knowledge to evaluate API design from the consumer's viewpoint.

• Experience in developing observability and logging practices for a team, rather than merely utilizing them.
