Principal Database Engineer – Platform Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the architecture, implementation, reliability, and lifecycle management of Veradigm’s database platform across various engines and cloud service providers.

• Create database systems from start to finish, encompassing engine and deployment-model selection, server and storage architecture, multi-cloud infrastructure, as well as high-availability and disaster-recovery strategies.

• Ensure 24×7 production reliability and act as the final point of escalation for significant outages, complex performance challenges, and inter-team database issues.

• Define database architecture for new business applications, including engine selection, deployment model, topology, sizing, integration patterns, and availability targets of up to 99.99%.

• Design and deploy multi-cloud database infrastructure across AWS and Azure environments.

• Write and review Terraform infrastructure-as-code for provisioning, configuration management, and lifecycle automation.

• Supervise database security, integrity, and performance, including access controls, encryption, audit logging, HIPAA-compliant PHI protection, vulnerability management, and integrity validation.

• Implement monitoring, observability, and alerting mechanisms across database systems and cloud platforms.

• Lead intricate performance investigations and database 911 responses among product engineering teams.

• Provide technical leadership to colleagues and assign tasks for both major and minor projects.

• Independently execute and document enhancement requests.

• Review and validate technical design specifications.

• Design, audit, and test high-availability and disaster-recovery architectures, including failover, replication, RPO/RTO planning, backups, point-in-time recovery, and restore drills.

• Manage concurrent database platform projects from inception to completion, including requirements gathering, architecture design, implementation, scheduling, deployment, testing, and handoff.

• Serve as a subject matter expert in database technologies, AWS, Azure, managed PaaS, and self-managed IaaS deployments.

• Establish technical direction for AI-enhanced database operations, including LLM-assisted design, ML-driven anomaly detection, automated performance tuning, and natural-language operational tools.

• Work standard hours or hours defined by assignments; provide on-call and after-hours support during peak times.

• Travel up to 10% as needed.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent Technical / Business experience.

• 10+ years of relevant work experience, with 2-3 years at the Expert level or equivalent experience - Preferred.

• Expertise in SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, and Snowflake.

• In-depth knowledge of database performance monitoring, tuning, and triage.

• Proficient in T-SQL, PowerShell, Python, Bash, and Terraform.

• Extensive experience in multi-cloud database engineering across AWS and Azure.

• Strong understanding of database server, storage, and network architecture.

• Expert knowledge of high-availability and disaster-recovery architectures supporting 99.99% uptime.

• Familiarity with change management principles.

• Advanced project management skills.

• Ability to collaborate effectively with teams and accept constructive criticism.

• Capacity to provide partnership and consultation to product and engineering teams.

• Up to 10% travel may be necessary.

• May require after-hours, on-call support and/or availability during holidays.

• Preferred certifications include: ITIL Foundations; MTA Database Fundamentals; MCSA Database Administrator; Azure Fundamentals; Azure Data Fundamentals; Microsoft Certified Azure Data Engineer Associate.
