Software Engineer – Backend, AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal.

📋 Description

• Design, create, test, and sustain scalable backend services and APIs.

• Develop features that allow users to create, configure, test, deploy, monitor, and manage AI agents throughout their entire lifecycle.

• Create services that facilitate agent configuration, orchestration, workflow execution, tools, prompts, knowledge sources, integrations, and runtime behavior.

• Develop APIs and service interfaces that foster intuitive user experiences and dependable frontend-backend interactions.

• Oversee agent configurations, versions, state, context, tools, permissions, and runtime components.

• Enable agents to interact securely with Intermedia products, enterprise applications, APIs, data sources, and external services.

• Collaborate with AI/ML engineers to integrate large language models and other AI capabilities.

• Work closely with frontend engineers, UX teams, product managers, AI Platform, DevOps, and infrastructure teams.

• Contribute to technical design decisions regarding orchestration, configuration management, workflow execution, integrations, and backend services.

• Develop capabilities for testing, evaluation, troubleshooting, monitoring, logging, and observability.

• Manage agent execution errors, retries, timeouts, and various runtime conditions.

• Design authentication, authorization, permissions, and secure access controls.

• Ensure scalability, reliability, performance, observability, and fault tolerance.

• Write high-quality, maintainable, testable code and engage in code and design reviews.

• Diagnose complex backend, workflow, integration, and AI-enabled functionality issues.

• Facilitate the reliable deployment and operation of production services.

• Keep up-to-date with advancements in AI agents, generative AI, backend engineering, and distributed systems.

• Engage in continuous improvement initiatives.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

• 4–7 years of professional software engineering experience in developing backend applications and services.

• Strong expertise in one or more backend programming languages and their respective frameworks.

• Experience in designing and developing RESTful APIs, microservices, or other service-oriented applications.

• Knowledge of software design principles, data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems concepts.

• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases.

• Proven experience in building and supporting scalable, reliable production applications.

• Background in integrating applications with both internal and external APIs, services, and data sources.

• Experience in designing backend services to support complex, interactive product experiences.

• Familiarity with AWS or Azure and cloud-native application architectures.

• Understanding of automated testing, CI/CD, source control, and contemporary software development practices.

• Knowledge of monitoring, logging, observability, and production support practices.

• Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to independently investigate and resolve complex technical challenges.

• Ability to thrive in a rapidly changing environment.

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills across backend, frontend, AI/ML, Product, UX, and platform teams.

• Working knowledge of Agile development methodologies and frameworks.
