Senior UNIX System Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Oversee, maintain, deploy, troubleshoot, and provide support for servers in diverse Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Enterprise Linux, and Solaris UNIX settings.

• Strategize, implement, and execute new system hardware and software solutions.

• Develop and preserve team technical instructions, operating procedures, and policy documentation.

• Monitor and optimize system performance.

• Secure servers and report on the overall security posture and operational status.

• Suggest and implement enhancements for the enterprise.

• Manage the integration of new software and hardware.

• Generate utilization reports using existing tools to pinpoint issues and corrective measures.

• Support the lifecycle of mixed-vendor datacenter equipment, including firmware version control and routine preventive maintenance.

• Recommend, showcase, and implement technologies to expand, upgrade, and enhance the efficiency of the current environment.

• Collaborate with the existing UNIX team.

• Provide support for mission-critical Army IT services across enterprise datacenters and cloud-hosted settings.

⛳️ Requirements

• CompTIA Security+ certification.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field is preferred; equivalent hands-on UNIX/Linux systems engineering experience may be considered in place of a degree.

• Experience in Computer Science or IT.

• Computing Environment (CE) Certification (e.g., RedHat), which may be waived for 30 days following the project start date.

• Active DoD Secret Security Clearance.

• Five or more years of experience as a UNIX Systems Administrator or IT Engineer, demonstrating experience in task automation.

• Three or more years of experience in patch management, including applying security updates through YUM and RPM.

• Three or more years of experience in complex network environments, encompassing VLANs and troubleshooting tools such as ifconfig, netstat, ssh, and telnet.

• Proficient in hardening systems using firewalld/iptables and hosts.

• Three or more years of experience managing a large number of local users via the command line.

• Three or more years of experience in creating, maintaining, and adhering to Standard Operating Procedures for repeatable processes, disaster recovery, and common problem resolution.

• Three or more years of experience configuring and maintaining DNS, SFTP, SMTP, and NTP.

• Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to being a team player.

• Preferred: four or more years of experience with SELinux.

• Preferred: experience in Cybersecurity patch management, STIG, SRG, RMF, SCA-V, and CORA.

• Preferred: experience in deploying large-scale hardware/software enhancements or upgrades across distributed geographic locations.

• Preferred: familiarity with current and emerging network and infrastructure management technologies and business practices.
