Senior Software Engineer, Backend – Cards

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Bulgaria, +3 more countries.

📋 Description

• Design and execute features for the card platform from start to finish, including tokenization, secure handling of card data, transaction enrichment, and settlement workflows.

• Develop and manage integrations with card issuers and payment processors.

• Create architectures that span multiple services, ensuring they are scalable, secure, and compliant with PCI standards.

• Take ownership of features and projects from their inception to completion, breaking down complex domains into manageable work items.

• Lead technical initiatives across teams focusing on shared libraries, patterns, and infrastructure improvements.

• Conduct thorough code reviews within the team, providing constructive and detailed feedback.

• Mentor colleagues and establish quality benchmarks.

• Become part of a small, self-directed team responsible for managing its own problem area and implementing sustainable, straightforward solutions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience as a Backend Engineer, ideally within the FinTech or payments sector.

• Proficiency in Java and Spring Boot.

• Experience in building and maintaining APIs and services within a microservices architecture.

• Strong knowledge of card payments, issuing, or transaction processing.

• Passion for utilizing AI-assisted development tools, such as Claude Code and AI code review agents.

• Ability to independently manage tasks and scale from well-defined projects to multi-sprint initiatives.

• Exceptional problem-solving abilities, comfortable working either independently or collaboratively across teams.

• Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes.

• Familiarity with code review as a method for mentoring and enhancing team-wide standards.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Knowledge of crypto/fiat payment systems is advantageous.

• Willingness to participate in an out-of-hours on-call rotation.
