Senior Software Development Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +16 more states.

📋 Description

• Design, create, and manage backend services and APIs for self-service cloud functionalities, including account provisioning, networking, IAM, and policy management.

• Transform repetitive cloud tasks and manual processes into secure, default-safe APIs, controls, and automation solutions.

• Consider Zillow teams as platform customers by comprehending use cases, shaping interfaces and paved paths, and leveraging feedback and usage data to inform the roadmap.

• Ensure platform reliability through observability, Service Level Objectives (SLOs), self-healing mechanisms, on-call support, and proactive measures that resolve recurring issues.

• Utilize contemporary AI-assisted and agentic tools to enhance design, implementation, and operational processes while upholding quality and safety standards.

• Influence the approach of Platform Engineering towards public cloud enablement and contribute to product-focused design and roadmap decisions.

• Develop fundamental capabilities into a unified self-service platform that is experienced as a product.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 6 years of professional experience in software engineering, specifically in building and operating backend or platform services in a production environment.

• Strong system design expertise for distributed systems and API-centric platforms.

• Production-level experience in Golang or Python (preferred), or another modern programming language.

• Excellent habits in testing, code review, and debugging.

• Significant experience with at least one public cloud provider, ideally AWS.

• Profound understanding of cloud primitives such as VPCs, subnets, routing, load balancers, security groups, IAM, compute, and storage solutions.

• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform, including the development of reusable and tested software, safety reviews, and drift management.

• Practical knowledge of cloud security principles, including IAM, network segmentation, encryption, and policy enforcement across multi-account environments.

• Hands-on experience in designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, such as GitLab Pipelines, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or Argo.

• A mindset geared towards reducing toil through software solutions.

• Nice to have: experience with internal platforms or developer tooling.

• Nice to have: experience treating an internal platform as a product.

• Nice to have: familiarity with service-to-service networking, service mesh, workload identity, or rate limiting.

• Nice to have: solid fundamentals in Linux systems and networking.
