Senior Relay Field Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Conduct testing and routine maintenance on Transmission and Distribution substation power equipment.

• Evaluate electro-mechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor relays.

• Assess pilot channel equipment, including power line carriers, pilot wires, transfer trips, fiber optics, CVTs, line tuners, and line traps.

• Examine controls and communications equipment.

• Interpret substation drawings accurately, including single-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings.

• Assist in developing procedures and test plans for maintenance and construction projects.

• Review and confirm relay voltage and current inputs.

• Validate local and SCADA metering, trips, alarms, and function switches.

• Calibrate relays as needed.

• Carry out routine troubleshooting and repairs of substation relaying and control systems.

• Commission new substations, power equipment, relays, pilot channel equipment, controls, and communications systems.

• Organize, schedule, and execute test activities efficiently, ensuring timely completion without service interruptions.

• Provide technical project support to Field Service personnel.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 5 years of field experience in commissioning, panel and equipment checkout, relay calibration, and the testing and repair of substation relaying and control systems.

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited university.

• A degree with a focus on power systems is preferred.

• Experience in substation design, construction, commissioning, and SCADA/Fault Data/SER/Integration-Automation equipment installation and testing is desirable.

• Understanding of three-phase power systems and power system protection and control schemes.

• Familiarity with test equipment and related software.

• Proficient in using test equipment and tools, as well as wiring.

• Ability to interpret wiring and elementary diagrams.

• Basic testing abilities to carry out the outlined responsibilities.

• Fundamental computer skills.

• Capacity to quickly learn and implement test procedures for various substation equipment.

• Effective communication skills with diverse groups, adjusting communication style for the audience and context.

• Willingness to learn and apply client-specific switching procedures and safety protocols.

• Ability to reference and fulfill assignments as described in relevant specifications.

• Capability to perform regular fieldwork in both indoor and outdoor environments.

• Strong interpersonal, communication, business acumen, and management skills.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

• Possession of a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

• Proficiency in English communication, including reading and writing.

• Must meet the client-specific work authorization criteria; currently, only U.S. Citizens and qualifying TN visa holders are eligible.
