Senior PHP Symfony Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom, +3 more countries.

📋 Description

• Take charge of backend development within the main Symfony application.

• Achieve full independence in delivering work within 2–3 months of your start date.

• Review and critically evaluate code produced by the team and AI tools.

• Assist in the migration from Symfony 6.1 to Symfony 7.

• Address versioning, compatibility, and legacy issues.

• Enhance application performance, scalability, and maintainability.

• Work with Angular front end, TypeScript, and Python-based AI agent services.

• Collaborate with DevOps when backend changes affect other system components.

• Gain a solid understanding of the Angular/TypeScript codebase.

• Evaluate the broader impact of technical choices across Symfony, Angular, and AI services.

• Identify root causes and enhance existing methodologies.

• Deliver maintainable solutions within a legacy code environment.

• Operate autonomously while collaborating with a remote, cross-functional team.

• Adhere to SOC 2, PII, and security standards.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 5 years focused on PHP.

• More than 7 years of expert-level PHP development experience.

• At least 3 years of recent commercial experience with Symfony 6.x/7 at an advanced level.

• Over 4 years of advanced experience in backend architecture, system design, and scalability.

• More than 2 years of advanced experience using AI development tools critically, including reviewing, validating, and challenging AI-generated code.

• At least 5 years of advanced MySQL experience, encompassing database schema design and query optimization.

• A minimum of 1 year of experience working with or understanding Angular/TypeScript.

• Over 3 years of advanced experience with automated testing using PHPUnit.

• At least 1 year of intermediate experience in framework upgrades and modernizing legacy codebases.

• More than 2 years of intermediate AWS experience.

• Fluent written and spoken English skills.

• Strong written and verbal communication abilities, capable of working effectively in a remote setting.

• Availability to work UK hours.

• Capability to successfully pass strict background checks and comply with PII and data protection regulations.

• Strong self-sufficiency and the ability to work independently after 2–3 months.

• A hands-on engineering approach coupled with an architectural mindset.

• Nice-to-have: Over 2 years of intermediate CI/CD experience with GitHub Actions.

• Nice-to-have: Basic knowledge of Amazon Redshift or data warehousing.

• Nice-to-have: Exposure to Azure alongside AWS.

• Nice-to-have: Previous experience in project leadership.

• Nice-to-have: Experience in mentoring and providing technical leadership.
