Senior Network Design Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Idaho, +2 more states.

📋 Description

• Design and develop carrier-grade core, distribution, and access network solutions utilizing IP/MPLS, Ethernet, optical transport, PON, LTE, wireless, and related backhaul technologies.

• Create high-level and low-level network designs, select equipment, prepare bills of material, and devise implementation and migration plans, as well as Methods of Procedure.

• Lead efforts in network capacity planning and system-requirement definition, providing technical guidance during equipment and vendor evaluation and selection.

• Oversee or assist with complex network implementations, upgrades, migrations, and service activations from initial concept to operational acceptance.

• Design, deploy, configure, manage, and support PON systems and services, including provisioning via Nokia Altiplano, along with LTE, wireless, and associated backhaul systems.

• Set network design standards and conduct senior-level reviews and approvals of network designs, configurations, standards, and implementation plans.

• Act as a senior engineering escalation point for intricate multi-vendor network and service challenges, including issues that impact business operations.

• Develop and maintain network standards, design documentation, diagrams, technical support literature, and operational handoff materials.

• Collaborate with Project Management to identify technical dependencies, risks, resource requirements, and implementation timelines.

• Lead customer professional-services engagements, covering requirements gathering, network assessments, architecture and detailed design, equipment and vendor evaluations, implementation and migration strategies, deployment support, testing, troubleshooting, and technical documentation.

• Collaborate with Sales and Account Management to deliver technical sales support, define solution scope and equipment needs, and present technical solutions.

• Architect new services and potential fiber routes, researching, evaluating, and developing network technologies and equipment platforms.

• Provide technical mentorship and guidance to engineering and operations teams.

• Participate in frequent travel and provide engineering escalation/on-call support for network outages.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, telecommunications, or a related field from an accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.

• Generally, 8 or more years of progressively responsible experience in designing, implementing, and supporting service-provider or large-scale enterprise networks.

• Advanced knowledge of IP/MPLS network architecture, design, and troubleshooting methodologies.

• Advanced understanding of IP routing, including BGP and interior gateway protocols like OSPF.

• Strong grasp of MPLS services and concepts, including L2/L3 VPNs, VRFs, resiliency, and high-availability design.

• Advanced understanding of Ethernet switching and Carrier Ethernet concepts, such as VLANs, QinQ, link aggregation, and Layer 2 service design.

• Experience in designing and troubleshooting high-capacity WAN and backbone networks, including interfaces of 10G, 100G, and higher.

• Working knowledge of DWDM and optical transport concepts and components, including wavelengths, optical budgets, amplification, ROADMs, and coherent optics.

• Experience with designing, configuring, and troubleshooting QoS for WAN and service-provider networks.

• Strong troubleshooting skills for networks, including the safe application of debug/trace tools, packet captures, logs, protocol analysis, and vendor diagnostic capabilities in production settings.

• Knowledge of network security design and operations, including authentication/AAA, firewalls, remote access, access control lists, role and password management, and configuration management.

• Ability to independently organize and prioritize tasks, manage shifting priorities, and handle multiple complex technical assignments simultaneously.

• Exceptional written, verbal, organizational, and customer-facing communication skills.

• Capacity to clearly explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Residency in WA, OR, or ID is mandatory.

• Frequent travel is required; the position should be based in a location with convenient air travel access.

• Participation in engineering escalation and on-call support for network outages is required.

• Must be capable of lifting and carrying over 25 pounds.

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a satisfactory driving record.

• EIT certification, PE licensure, or demonstrated eligibility and active progress toward professional engineering licensure is preferred.

• Experience working in a multi-vendor service-provider or telecommunications network environment.

• Hands-on experience with Nokia SR OS, Juniper routing platforms, Cisco switching platforms, and ADVA/Adtran or similar optical transport systems.

• Experience with Nokia Altiplano and LTE, microwave, or other wireless access and backhaul systems.

• Familiarity with network automation, scripting, APIs, or data-driven network management is desirable.

• Experience leading technical projects or workstreams from concept development through implementation and operational handoff.

• Experience in creating technical presentations, solution documentation, and customer-facing network designs.
