Senior Mainframe Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +28 more states.

📋 Description

• Act as a technical leader, guiding best practices and mentoring team members on optimizing z/OS operating system upgrades.

• Create and implement standardized methods for z/OS upgrades and mass maintenance.

• Lead initiatives aimed at enhancing system performance, simplifying processes, and minimizing operational complexity.

• Supervise the installation, configuration, and upkeep of IBM and ISV software products.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to strategize and execute operating system upgrades with minimal disruption to business operations.

• Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation and templates for operating system deployments.

• Promote the adoption of new technologies and features, including Sysplex enhancements and automation frameworks.

• Serve as the subject matter expert for mainframe infrastructure projects, offering technical guidance and governance.

• Provide advanced troubleshooting and resolution for escalated incidents that exceed Level 1 support.

• Engage in after-hours and weekend support as necessary.

⛳️ Requirements

• Demonstrated experience in z/OS operating system upgrades, mass maintenance deployment, and software installation.

• Comprehensive knowledge of z/OS components such as JES2, HCD/IODF, SMP/E, WLM, OMVS/USS, SMF/RMF, ASM, GRS, SDSF, TSO, and RACF.

• Strong understanding of communication protocols (VTAM, TCP/IP) and LPAR configuration through HMC.

• Proficient in storage management (SMS, HSM, DFDSS, VSAM, IDCAMS, ICF Catalogs).

• At least 10 years of experience as a Mainframe Senior Systems Engineer.

• Candidates must have unrestricted work authorization and will not require future sponsorship.

• Familiarity with mainframe automation and monitoring tools.

• Experience with significant subsystems (CICS TS, IMS, DB2, and IBM MQ).

• Knowledge of tape library configuration, printer setup, and TCP/IP server configuration.

• Understanding of IBM Z hardware architecture.

• Proven ability to lead technical teams, influence decisions, and establish strategic direction.

• Competent in developing repeatable, standardized processes for complex system upgrades and migrations.

• Strong problem-solving abilities with a focus on efficiency and continuous improvement.

• Excellent communication skills—capable of clearly articulating technical concepts to diverse audiences.
