Senior Java Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and enhance the core Java backend services that drive Praia's consumer experience and platform ecosystem.

• Create and sustain JavaScript components, UI workflows, and client-side integration hooks.

• Construct and manage enterprise integration services for EMRs, including Epic/MyChart, utilizing HL7 FHIR APIs and contemporary interoperability patterns.

• Utilize Databricks and Apache Spark to develop or assist with data pipelines, workflows, and analytical tasks as required.

• Create and maintain secure REST and event-driven APIs with OAuth2/OIDC for authentication and authorization, including auditing and least-privilege controls.

• Produce developer documentation, OpenAPI specifications, and runbooks.

• Oversee CI/CD pipelines, automated unit/integration/E2E testing, infrastructure-as-code, structured logging, and incident response.

• Collaborate with Product, Design, and partner-facing teams to transform technical requirements into robust solutions.

• Work closely with engineering leadership to deliver resilient software at a consistent, well-defined pace.

• Establish comprehensive architectural ownership of Praia's platform.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 6 years of experience in building and operating production software.

• Proven senior-level expertise and clear ownership of distributed, high-throughput systems.

• Mastery of software development within Java and the modern Java ecosystem.

• Proficiency in Quarkus or Spring Boot, concurrency, and microservices.

• Strong practical knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript and contemporary client-side architectures.

• Experience in integrating with EMR/EHR systems and healthcare interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7, SMART on FHIR), or equivalent experience in heavily regulated sectors like FinTech.

• Experience in delivering cloud-native services using AWS, Azure, or GCP.

• Familiarity with Kubernetes/Docker and Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.

• In-depth understanding of OAuth2, OIDC, mTLS, JWT, secrets management, and secure SDLC practices.

• Practical experience with modern observability tools, including metrics, distributed tracing, APM, and log aggregation.

• Outstanding written and verbal communication abilities.

• Capability to write technical design documents and explain architectural trade-offs clearly.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

• Must be a permanent resident of the United States or Canada.
