Senior Geospatial Researcher III/IV

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colorado.

📋 Description

• Develop and enhance a research portfolio focused on geospatial modeling and the characterization of new electricity generation, as well as large-load impacts and infrastructure needs.

• Create innovative spatiotemporal methods for system performance and cost modeling, sensitivity analysis, and optimization of site selection.

• Conceptualize and assess new research strategies and methods aimed at sustainable energy solutions across various geographic and temporal dimensions.

• Integrate diverse data sources, models, and software tools into scientific and engineering workflows to facilitate data analysis and decision-making.

• Utilize distributed parallel computing with both cloud-based and on-premise high-performance computing resources.

• Convey research findings through publications in journals and presentations at conferences.

• Organize and engage in workshops and seminars for stakeholder involvement.

• Craft proposals for new research initiatives.

• Act as the principal investigator and technical lead on key existing and emerging projects.

• Provide technical guidance and mentor junior personnel.

• Collaborate with industry partners, academic institutions, the Department of Energy, computer scientists, policy analysts, and systems engineers.

• Support DOE projects and external clients of the laboratory.

⛳️ Requirements

• Relevant PhD with 4 or more years of experience, or a relevant Master's Degree with 7 or more years of experience, or a relevant Bachelor's Degree with 9 or more years of experience for Researcher IV.

• PhD in Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or a related field, or a Master's Degree with 3 or more years of experience, or a relevant Bachelor's Degree with 5 or more years of experience for Researcher III.

• Educational qualifications must be fulfilled prior to the employment start date.

• Proven ability to form and lead dynamic project teams, manage budgets and timelines, and foster strong relationships with stakeholders and sponsors.

• Strong quantitative background in spatial statistics, predictive modeling, data analytics, and/or complex systems modeling.

• Proficient in scientific programming and algorithm development.

• Demonstrated experience using Python and open-source geospatial tools for modeling and analyzing large, complex datasets.

• Proven ability to effectively communicate results through scientific visualizations, publications, and presentations.

• A resume and an online code repository such as GitHub featuring several publicly visible coding projects, or an explanation in the cover letter if not provided.

• Experience with Linux-based, scalable, open-source analysis tools is essential.

• Expert-level proficiency in geospatial modeling is mandatory.

• Excellent technical writing, interpersonal, and communication skills are required.

• Researcher IV: substantial scientific technical expertise, leadership in multiple areas, and demonstrated project management experience.

• Researcher III: comprehensive understanding and wide application of scientific technical procedures, principles, theories, and concepts; leadership in one or more areas; demonstrated project management experience.

• Must be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card and successfully pass a background investigation.

• Must complete a pre-employment drug test prior to starting employment.
