This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Take ownership of Fundrise’s technical tax positions, primarily in relation to REITs and RICs, along with the associated risks.
• Document the rationale behind tax positions to meet audit-defensible standards and assess exposures for the CFO, portfolio management, and the executive team.
• Elevate matters that necessitate external opinions and make independent decisions on other tax-related issues.
• Design and manage the division of tasks between in-house responsibilities and external resources.
• Define engagement scopes, negotiate fees, establish service levels, manage the tax vendor budget, and implement review controls.
• Oversee compliance across the platform, including REIT and RIC qualifications, asset and income testing, prohibited transaction analysis, earnings and profits, and distribution mandates.
• Supervise federal and state filings for Forms 1120-REIT, 1120-RIC, 1120, and 1065, which includes filing schedules, extension strategies, and nexus determinations.
• Deliver ASC 740 provisions in accordance with the SEC reporting calendar.
• Manage review controls for investor 1099s prepared by Fundrise software.
• Review externally prepared K-1s and collaborate with Investor Relations on tax-related content and inquiries for investors.
• Collaborate with real estate and venture teams on acquisition and disposition structures and assess transaction documentation.
• Foster internal relationships and engage during the establishment of transaction terms.
• Document positions, methodologies, and recurring processes to maintain institutional knowledge.
• Automate manual tasks, including using AI-driven workflows.
• Develop and uphold a small team of senior in-house professionals to high standards.
• Rigorously manage external partners.
• Report to the CFO and participate on the finance leadership team.
• Over 10 years of tax experience, demonstrating genuine technical expertise in REIT taxation.
• Exposure to partnership, TRS, RIC/’40 Act, and Qualified Opportunity Fund is advantageous.
• Proven experience defending positions before auditors, regulators, or during examinations.
• Strong documentation discipline for audit-defensible tax positions.
• Direct experience delivering results through external advisors, offshore delivery centers, or fund administrators.
• Experience in critically evaluating externally provided work.
• Proven track record of making decisions, articulating viewpoints clearly, and taking ownership of outcomes.
• Ability to drive results through Finance, Legal, Real Estate, Venture, and Engineering partners without direct authority.
• Proficient in translating complex tax issues for executives, auditors, the board, and investors.
• Comfortable working in a small, fast-paced, predominantly remote organization.
• CPA, JD/LLM, or equivalent certification preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or comparable experience.
• Strong belief in Fundrise’s social mission.
• Must reside in the United States.
