This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to design and implement scalable and reliable data storage solutions for both online and analytical workloads.
• Oversee and enhance SQL Server and MySQL databases, focusing on schema design, query optimization, replication, backup/recovery, and performance monitoring.
• Develop and maintain data integration pipelines across various data stores.
• Adhere to and advocate for best practices in relational and NoSQL database design.
• Work alongside data engineering and data science teams to tackle data challenges and deliver robust, flexible solutions.
• Contribute to data governance and security efforts for the data platform.
• Diagnose issues across the entire stack, including hardware, software, and networking components.
• Design and create automation and tools throughout the software development lifecycle, covering provisioning, version control, CI/CD, and deployment.
• Collaborate with Software Engineering teams to execute product development solutions, and write stored procedures and scripts as required.
• Participate in the on-call rotation as necessary.
• Investigate emerging technologies and propose solutions to advance SurveyMonkey's evolving data platform and strategy.
• Over 7 years of experience managing high-performance databases in production settings.
• More than 5 years of hands-on experience with strong SQL query skills, including the ability to create complex, highly optimized queries across extensive datasets.
• At least 3 years of direct experience in designing, optimizing, and managing PostgreSQL databases in production environments.
• In-depth knowledge of SQL Server, including clustering, high availability groups, and both vertical and horizontal partitioning.
• Comprehensive expertise in MySQL, encompassing replication, partitioning, indexing, stored procedures, and performance tuning.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience writing and maintaining Terraform configurations for provisioning and managing cloud infrastructure.
• Practical experience with vector databases such as Pinecone, Milvus, Qdrant, or pgvector.
• Over 2 years of experience with cloud-based database solutions such as AWS RDS, Aurora, and DynamoDB.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field; AWS certification is an advantage.
• Solid understanding of relational and analytical database solutions, NoSQL data stores, and data warehouse concepts.
• Experience in ETL development and highly available database architectures in both on-premises and cloud environments.
• Familiarity with Windows and/or Unix systems administration.
• Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Bash, PowerShell, or others.
• Experience with configuration management systems; Ansible is a plus.
• Experience working within virtualized environments.
• Proficiency in repeatable automation practices at both the operating system and database levels.
• Capability to work efficiently as part of a geographically dispersed team.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly present data modeling decisions.
• Must reside in a registered hiring location: Ontario or Alberta.
