Senior Database Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Provide strategic support and management for ExploreK12's database ecosystem.

• Oversee production support, system upgrades, performance tuning, and disaster recovery processes.

• Configure and manage database replication.

• Analyze and enhance SQL query plans for optimization.

• Manage database backups and restorations effectively.

• Optimize application queries for improved performance.

• Enhance the tools and services associated with the database.

• Improve scalability and performance of current database structures.

• Maintain and monitor backup processes, testing restorations in collaboration with system engineers.

• Work alongside infrastructure teams, developers, product managers, and other internal stakeholders to determine system requirements.

• Monitor system performance and alerts to proactively identify potential issues.

• Handle private data with ethical consideration.

• Minimize database downtime while maximizing reliability.

• Predict future capacity requirements for database management.

• Review requirements, specifications, and technical design documents, offering timely feedback.

• Stay updated with the latest technological advancements.

• Establish database standards and best practices for application engineering teams.

• Provide technical guidance to engineering teams without direct reporting responsibilities.

• Report to the Systems Manager.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience in engineering or administering databases.

• Hands-on experience in building and operating performance-critical applications and databases.

• Extensive experience with MySQL/Linux and SQL Server/Windows environments.

• Strong understanding of relational databases, including normalization, indexing, and SQL.

• Knowledge of data security and integrity principles.

• Familiarity with high-volume SaaS database environments.

• Exceptional verbal, written, illustrative, and diagrammatic communication skills.

• Ability to cultivate strong relationships.

• Experience with student-data privacy frameworks such as FERPA is highly preferred.

• Knowledge of PHP or other scripting languages is preferred.

• Experience with NoSQL databases is preferred.

• Background in Agile/Scrum development processes is preferred.

• Recent experience with iPaaS and/or canonical data models is preferred.

• Experience in leading or contributing to on-premises-to-cloud migrations is preferred.

• A reliable cable or fiber-optic broadband connection with minimum speeds of 10 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload is required for remote work.

• Must be able to participate in video interviews and ongoing virtual meetings with the camera on.

• Must refrain from using note-taking tools, reference materials, or AI-powered tools during interviews or selection activities unless prior written consent is obtained.
