Senior Database Administrator, ClickHouse

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Ukraine.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the reliability and performance of production ClickHouse clusters on Kubernetes or managed ClickHouse services.

• Create standard architecture and tools for multiple multi-node clusters.

• Oversee cluster provisioning, configuration, scaling, upgrades, and migrations using code.

• Develop monitoring and alerting systems to detect issues before they impact users.

• Manage backups and disaster recovery, performing regular restore tests.

• Ensure clusters are secured by default.

• Plan for capacity and manage infrastructure expenses.

• Provide guidance to developers, DevOps engineers, DBAs, and engineering leadership regarding ClickHouse, schema design, data ingestion, and query performance.

• Process routine database requests and automate them effectively.

• Address rare production emergencies, including those outside of business hours.

• Lead root-cause analysis for database issues and contribute to postmortem reviews.

• Maintain documentation and runbooks while sharing knowledge with the team.

⛳️ Requirements

• In-depth, DBA-level expertise in ClickHouse gained from production experience.

• Proficient in SQL, including the optimization of complex analytical queries and schema design evaluation.

• Capability to design architecture and automation for multiple multi-node clusters.

• Experience managing a large database fleet is highly advantageous.

• Proven experience in running and maintaining stateful workloads on Kubernetes in a production environment.

• Hands-on experience with a Kubernetes operator for database management.

• Familiarity with version upgrades, backup and restore processes, and migrating large datasets between clusters or regions with minimal or zero downtime.

• Strong troubleshooting abilities across queries, schema design, Kubernetes, Linux, storage, and networking.

• Experience in building monitoring and alerting systems using a modern observability stack.

• Practical knowledge of database security, including encryption in transit and at rest, access control, and secrets management.

• Proficiency in infrastructure as code using a mainstream tool.

• At least one programming or scripting language for automation tasks.

• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure from a major provider.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with engineers and leadership.

• Ability to independently take a problem from investigation to production resolution.

• Nice to have: practical experience with Kubernetes operator source code.

• Nice to have: practical application of AI tools for database observability or routine operational automation.

• Nice to have: experience in highly regulated environments.

• Nice to have: Kubernetes or cloud certifications.
