Senior Database Administrator, ClickHouse

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the reliability and performance of production ClickHouse clusters on Kubernetes or through managed ClickHouse services.

• Design standardized architecture and tools for numerous multi-node clusters.

• Manage the provisioning, configuration, scaling, upgrades, and migrations of clusters as code.

• Develop monitoring and alerting systems to identify issues before they impact users.

• Oversee backups and disaster recovery, conducting regular tests of restores.

• Ensure clusters maintain security by default.

• Plan for capacity and manage infrastructure costs effectively.

• Provide guidance to developers, DevOps engineers, DBAs, and engineering leadership regarding ClickHouse, schema design, data ingestion, and query performance.

• Manage routine database requests and automate these processes.

• Address rare production emergencies, including those occurring outside regular business hours.

• Lead the root-cause analysis for database issues and contribute to postmortem reviews.

• Maintain documentation and runbooks while sharing knowledge with the team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive, DBA-level expertise in ClickHouse from operational experience in production environments.

• Comprehensive understanding of ClickHouse's data storage, merging, replication, and querying mechanisms.

• Proficient in SQL, including optimizing complex analytical queries and evaluating schema designs.

• Capability to design architectures and automation for multiple multi-node clusters.

• Experience managing a large database fleet is a considerable advantage.

• Practical experience in running and maintaining stateful workloads on Kubernetes in production.

• Familiarity with utilizing a Kubernetes operator for database management.

• Experience with version upgrades, backup and restore processes, and migrating large datasets between clusters or regions with minimal to no downtime.

• Strong troubleshooting skills in queries, schema design, Kubernetes, Linux, storage, and networking.

• Experience in building monitoring and alerting systems using a contemporary observability stack.

• Practical experience in database security, encompassing encryption in transit and at rest, access control, and secrets management.

• Proficient in infrastructure as code using a mainstream tool.

• Knowledge of at least one programming or scripting language for automation purposes.

• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure from a major provider.

• Capable of clear written and verbal communication with both engineers and leadership.

• Ability to independently carry a problem from investigation to production resolution.

• Experience with hands-on work on Kubernetes database-operator source code (nice to have).

• Practical application of AI tools for database observability or operational automation (nice to have).

• Background in highly regulated environments (nice to have).

• Relevant Kubernetes or cloud certifications (nice to have).
