Senior Database Administrator, ClickHouse

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Kazakhstan.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the reliability and performance of production ClickHouse clusters, whether they are self-hosted on Kubernetes or operated through managed ClickHouse services.

• Develop standard architecture and tools for numerous multi-node clusters.

• Oversee the lifecycle of clusters as code, which includes provisioning, configuration, scaling, upgrades, and migrations.

• Create monitoring and alerting systems that detect issues before they impact users.

• Manage backups and disaster recovery processes, conducting regular restoration tests.

• Ensure that clusters maintain a secure default configuration.

• Plan capacity requirements and manage infrastructure costs effectively.

• Act as the ClickHouse authority for developers, DevOps engineers, DBAs, and engineering leadership.

• Assist with schema design, data ingestion, and optimizing query performance.

• Process routine database requests and automate them whenever possible.

• Address infrequent production emergencies, including during off-hours.

• Lead root-cause analysis on database-related issues and contribute to postmortem evaluations.

• Keep documentation and runbooks up to date while sharing knowledge within the team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive, DBA-level expertise in ClickHouse gained from production experience.

• Proficient in SQL, particularly in optimizing complex analytical queries and evaluating schema designs.

• Capability to design architecture and automation for multiple multi-node clusters.

• Experience managing a large number of databases is a significant advantage.

• Proven experience in maintaining stateful workloads within Kubernetes in a production environment.

• Practical use of a Kubernetes operator to manage databases.

• Demonstrated experience with version upgrades, backup and restore processes, and migrating large datasets between clusters or regions with minimal or no downtime.

• Strong troubleshooting skills across queries, schema design, Kubernetes, Linux, storage, and networking.

• Experience building monitoring and alerting systems using a modern observability stack.

• Hands-on experience with database security, including encryption in transit and at rest, access control, and secrets management.

• Familiarity with infrastructure as code using a widely-used tool.

• Proficient in at least one programming or scripting language for automation purposes.

• Practical cloud infrastructure experience with a leading provider.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with engineers and leadership.

• Ability to independently take a problem from investigation to a production fix.

• Nice to have: Contributions to Kubernetes operator source code.

• Nice to have: Familiarity with AI tools for database observability or operational automation.

• Nice to have: Experience in highly regulated environments.

• Nice to have: Certifications in Kubernetes or cloud technologies.
