Senior Database Administrator, ClickHouse

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Spain.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the reliability and performance of production ClickHouse clusters on Kubernetes or with managed ClickHouse services.

• Create standardized architecture and tools for multiple multi-node clusters.

• Oversee cluster provisioning, configuration, scaling, upgrades, and migrations through code.

• Develop monitoring and alerting systems to identify issues proactively before users are affected.

• Manage backups and disaster recovery, ensuring regular testing of restore processes.

• Ensure clusters are secure by default.

• Plan for capacity needs and manage infrastructure expenses.

• Provide guidance to developers, DevOps engineers, DBAs, and engineering leadership on ClickHouse, schema design, ingestion, and query optimization.

• Process routine database requests and automate these tasks.

• Address rare production emergencies, including those outside of standard business hours.

• Lead database root-cause analyses and contribute to postmortem evaluations.

• Maintain documentation and runbooks while sharing knowledge with the team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive DBA-level expertise in ClickHouse from hands-on experience in production environments.

• Proficient in SQL, with a focus on optimizing complex analytical queries and reviewing schema designs.

• Capability to design architecture and automation for numerous multi-node clusters.

• Experience managing a large database fleet; familiarity with dozens or hundreds of instances is a significant advantage.

• Proven experience maintaining stateful workloads on Kubernetes beyond the initial deployment phase.

• Practical experience utilizing a Kubernetes operator for database management.

• Experience with version upgrades, backup and restore processes, and migrating substantial datasets between clusters or regions with minimal or no downtime.

• Strong troubleshooting skills across queries, schema design, Kubernetes, Linux, storage, and networking.

• Experience in constructing monitoring and alerting systems using a modern observability stack.

• Practical experience in database security, including encryption in transit and at rest, access control, and secrets management.

• Familiarity with infrastructure as code using a mainstream tool.

• Proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language for automation purposes.

• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure from a major provider.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with engineers and leadership.

• Nice to have: experience with Kubernetes database-operator source code, AI tools for database observability or routine automation, background in highly regulated environments, or Kubernetes/cloud certifications.
