Senior Database Administrator, ClickHouse

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Serbia.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the reliability and performance of production ClickHouse clusters, whether on Kubernetes or managed ClickHouse services.

• Develop standard architecture and tools for multiple multi-node clusters.

• Oversee the cluster lifecycle through code, including provisioning, configuration, scaling, upgrades, and migrations.

• Create monitoring and alerting systems to proactively identify issues.

• Manage backups and disaster recovery processes, regularly testing restores.

• Ensure clusters are secure by default.

• Plan capacity and manage infrastructure expenses.

• Provide guidance to developers, DevOps engineers, DBAs, and engineering leadership on ClickHouse, schema design, data ingestion, and query performance.

• Handle routine database requests and automate them wherever feasible.

• Respond to infrequent production emergencies, including during off-business hours.

• Lead root-cause analysis on the database side and contribute to postmortems.

• Maintain documentation and runbooks, sharing knowledge with the team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive, DBA-level expertise in ClickHouse from hands-on production experience.

• Knowledge of how ClickHouse stores, merges, replicates, and queries data.

• Proficient in SQL, including optimizing complex analytical queries and evaluating schema design.

• Capability to design architecture and automation for multiple multi-node clusters.

• Experience managing a large database fleet is a significant advantage.

• Production experience in running and maintaining stateful workloads on Kubernetes.

• Practical experience using a Kubernetes operator to manage databases.

• Experience with version upgrades, backup and restore processes, and migrating large datasets between clusters or regions with minimal to zero downtime.

• Strong troubleshooting abilities across queries, schema design, Kubernetes, Linux, storage, and networking.

• Experience in building monitoring and alerting systems with a contemporary observability stack.

• Practical knowledge of database security, including encryption in transit and at rest, access control, and secrets management.

• Familiarity with infrastructure as code using a mainstream tool.

• Proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language for automation purposes.

• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure from a major provider.

• Clear verbal and written communication skills with engineers and leadership.

• Ability to take a problem from investigation to production fix independently.

• Hands-on experience working with the Kubernetes database-operator source code (nice to have).

• Practical experience utilizing AI tools for database observability or operational automation (nice to have).

• Background in highly regulated environments (nice to have).

• Kubernetes or cloud certifications (nice to have).
