Senior Database Administrator, ClickHouse

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Armenia.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the reliability and performance of production ClickHouse clusters on Kubernetes or managed ClickHouse services.

• Develop standard architecture and tools for numerous multi-node clusters.

• Oversee cluster provisioning, configuration, scaling, upgrades, and migrations through code.

• Create monitoring and alerting systems to identify issues before they affect users.

• Manage backups and disaster recovery processes; conduct regular restore tests.

• Ensure clusters are secure by default.

• Strategize capacity planning and manage infrastructure costs.

• Provide guidance to developers, DevOps engineers, DBAs, and engineering leadership on ClickHouse, schema design, data ingestion, and query optimization.

• Manage routine database requests and implement automation for these tasks.

• Address infrequent production emergencies, including during off-hours.

• Lead root-cause analysis for database issues and contribute to postmortem evaluations.

• Maintain documentation and runbooks while sharing knowledge with the team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive, DBA-level expertise in ClickHouse from hands-on production experience.

• Proficiency in SQL, particularly in optimizing complex analytical queries and evaluating schema design.

• Capable of designing architecture and automation for multiple multi-node clusters.

• Experience managing a large database fleet is highly beneficial.

• Proven experience in operating and sustaining stateful workloads on Kubernetes in a production environment.

• Practical experience using a Kubernetes operator to manage databases.

• Familiarity with version upgrades, backup and restore procedures, and migrating large datasets between clusters or regions with minimal to no downtime.

• Strong troubleshooting skills across queries, schema design, Kubernetes, Linux, storage, and networking.

• Experience in building monitoring and alerting systems with a contemporary observability stack.

• Practical knowledge of database security, including encryption during transit and at rest, access control, and secrets management.

• Experience with infrastructure as code using a recognized tool.

• Proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language for automation purposes.

• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure from a major provider.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with engineers and leadership.

• Ability to independently take a problem from investigation to production resolution.

• Nice to have: direct involvement with Kubernetes database operator source code.

• Nice to have: practical experience utilizing AI tools for database observability or routine operational automation.

• Nice to have: experience in highly regulated environments.

• Nice to have: Kubernetes or cloud certifications.
