Senior Database Administrator, ClickHouse

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Serbia.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the reliability and performance of production ClickHouse clusters hosted on Kubernetes or through managed ClickHouse services.

• Create standard architecture and tools for numerous multi-node clusters.

• Oversee cluster provisioning, configuration, scaling, upgrades, and migrations as part of code management.

• Develop monitoring and alerting systems to identify issues before they impact users.

• Manage backups and disaster recovery, ensuring regular testing of restore processes.

• Ensure default security measures are in place for all clusters.

• Strategize capacity planning and manage infrastructure expenses effectively.

• Act as the ClickHouse authority for developers, DevOps engineers, DBAs, and engineering leadership teams.

• Provide guidance on schema design, data ingestion, and optimizing query performance.

• Address routine database requests and automate processes wherever feasible.

• Respond to infrequent production emergencies, including those occurring outside regular business hours.

• Lead root-cause analysis for database incidents and contribute to postmortem discussions.

• Maintain documentation and runbooks while sharing knowledge with team members.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive, DBA-level expertise in ClickHouse gained from production experience.

• Proficient in SQL, with a focus on optimizing complex analytical queries and reviewing schema designs.

• Proven experience in designing architecture and automation for numerous multi-node clusters.

• Experience managing a large database fleet is highly advantageous.

• Demonstrated production experience with stateful workloads on Kubernetes.

• Familiarity with using a Kubernetes operator for database management.

• Experience in performing version upgrades, backup and restore, and migrating large datasets between clusters or regions with minimal or no downtime.

• Strong problem-solving skills in queries, schema design, Kubernetes, Linux, storage, and networking.

• Experience in building monitoring and alerting systems using a modern observability stack.

• Practical knowledge of database security practices, including encryption in transit and at rest, access control, and secrets management.

• Proficient in infrastructure as code with a widely-used tool.

• Knowledge of at least one programming or scripting language for automation purposes.

• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure from a major provider.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with engineers and leadership.

• Capability to independently take a problem from investigation to production resolution.

• Experience with the source code of a Kubernetes operator for databases is a plus.

• Practical experience with AI tools for database observability or operational automation is advantageous.

• Background in highly regulated environments is considered a plus.

• Kubernetes or cloud certifications are a nice addition.
