Senior Coverage Counsel

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts.

📋 Description

• Act as legal advisor for Hanover’s claims division.

• Conduct research and offer legal guidance and opinions to claims professionals on coverage matters arising from insurance agreements.

• Address issues related to auto and general liability, specialty, first-party property, and marine insurance.

• Draft timely, relevant, and actionable coverage opinions and advice regarding complex or high-risk claims.

• Collaborate with claims handlers to formulate strategies for the resolution of coverage disputes.

• Oversee select coverage litigation initiated by or against the Company, including declaratory judgment, extra-contractual bad faith, and other claims-related disputes.

• Review and authorize proposed coverage actions taken on behalf of the Company.

• Work in partnership with underwriting and product teams to enhance the Company’s insurance offerings.

• Report directly to the Managing Claims Counsel, Claims Legal.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in drafting coverage opinions on property casualty insurance policies, either in a law firm setting or in-house for a property and casualty insurer.

• Experience in litigating insurance coverage and associated bad faith disputes is advantageous.

• A minimum of 10 years of legal practice in a law firm or in-house, with a significant focus on property & casualty insurance coverage issues.

• Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.

• Proficient in building and maintaining strong relationships with colleagues and clients.

• Exceptional oral and written communication abilities, with a talent for clearly conveying actionable legal advice.

• Proficient in computer applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, along with strong keyboarding skills.

• Knowledgeable about legal principles and issues related to E-Discovery.

• JD degree or equivalent qualification.

• Authorized to practice in at least one US jurisdiction.

• Strong time management skills and the ability to organize work efficiently.
