Associate General Counsel, Privacy Officer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Draft, review, and negotiate intricate commercial agreements, including SaaS licenses, vendor contracts, and partnership/binder agreements.

• Provide support for product development, underwriting authorities, and digital automation risks.

• Ensure adherence to provincial insurance regulations such as RIBO across Canadian operating provinces.

• Assist the General Counsel in the preparation of materials for the Board of Directors.

• Offer legal advice to the internal Claims/Errors & Omissions team on complex cases, litigation, and risk reduction.

• Act as the enterprise privacy authority and uphold the data protection framework in collaboration with the Information Security Officer.

• Develop, maintain, and manage Privacy Impact Assessments.

• Spearhead legal responses to data security incidents and privacy inquiries.

• Oversee breach notification assessments and ensure transparent reporting.

• Create and deliver compliance and privacy training for over 350 staff members.

• Establish ethical and legal boundaries for AI, machine learning, and AI-driven underwriting tools.

• Monitor emerging technology regulations in Canada.

• Review digital, online, and traditional marketing initiatives to ensure regulatory compliance.

• Assist the General Counsel/Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer in the maintenance and evolution of the corporate Ethics and Compliance program.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.

• Active member in good standing with a Canadian common law society, e.g., Law Society of Ontario.

• 6 to 10+ years of post-call legal experience.

• Proven experience integrating top-tier law firm training with in-house experience in property & casualty insurance, fintech, or the broader financial services sector.

• Profound understanding of the Canadian insurance regulatory landscape, digital brokerage models, and MGA structures.

• Comfortable providing advice on digital technology, online platforms, AI, and advanced tools.

• Demonstrated expertise in data protection law.

• Professional privacy certification such as CIPP/C is highly preferred and considered a major asset.

• Proven capability to navigate a corporate transition from startup to a regulated corporate structure.

• Ability to formalize corporate governance while fostering innovation.

• Exceptional communication abilities.

• Capacity to translate complex legal risks into solution-oriented business advice for non-legal stakeholders.

• Corporate diplomacy skills to operate effectively in both a tech startup and Fortune 500 parent company environment.
