Senior Coverage Counsel

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts.

📋 Description

• Act as legal advisor to Hanover’s claims division.

• Conduct research and offer legal guidance and insights to claims handlers regarding coverage matters arising from insurance agreements.

• Manage issues related to auto and general liability, specialty coverages such as management liability and professional liability, and first-party property and marine insurances.

• Deliver timely, relevant, and actionable coverage opinions and counsel on selected high-complexity/exposure claims.

• Collaborate with claims handlers to formulate strategies for effectively resolving coverage disputes.

• Oversee selected coverage litigation initiated by or against the Company, including declaratory judgment actions, extra-contractual bad-faith claims, and other claims-related disputes.

• Review and authorize proposed coverage actions taken on behalf of the Company.

• Work alongside underwriting and product teams to enhance the Company’s insurance offerings.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in drafting coverage opinions on property casualty insurance policies, either in a law firm or in-house for a property and casualty insurer.

• Background in litigating insurance coverage and related bad faith disputes is advantageous.

• A minimum of 10 years practicing law, either in a law firm or in-house, with a significant focus on property & casualty insurance coverage matters.

• Capability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.

• Proficiency in establishing and maintaining strong relationships with colleagues and clients.

• Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey actionable legal advice clearly.

• Competence in computer skills, including proficiency in Word, Excel, and Outlook, along with keyboarding abilities.

• Understanding of legal principles and issues related to E-Discovery.

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree or equivalent qualification.

• Licensed to practice in at least one US jurisdiction.

• Proficient in time management and organizing work effectively.
