Senior Commissioning Project Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois, +10 more states.

📋 Description

• Take charge of integrated commissioning delivery across typically 4-5 simultaneous EPC projects, from early planning and readiness through energization, testing, acceptance, closeout, and turnover.

• Develop commissioning strategies, execution models, governance schedules, responsibility assignments, readiness gates, milestone plans, and escalation protocols.

• Convert EPC contracts, customer expectations, interconnection obligations, commercial milestones, technical specifications, and company standards into cohesive commissioning plans.

• Deliver portfolio-level insights on status, forecasts, risks, constraints, resources, cost exposure, decisions, corrective actions, and support needs from executives.

• Integrate interfaces for PV, HV, BESS, SCADA/controls, networks, utilities, OEMs, testing, and Operations and Maintenance.

• Supervise scope-specific Commissioning Project Managers, field leads, technicians, OEM representatives, third-party providers, and project partners.

• Balance portfolio priorities and resources; identify conflicts and implement recovery or mitigation strategies.

• Facilitate project and portfolio coordination meetings, while maintaining decision logs, action ownership, deadlines, escalation paths, and accountability.

• Create and oversee integrated commissioning plans, P6 schedule logic, milestone and deliverables registers, resource plans, forecasts, and readiness criteria.

• Track labor, equipment, testing, OEM, vendor, and third-party commitments; assist with forecasts, accruals, cost-to-complete assessments, and recovery planning.

• Identify gaps in scope, changes, schedule impacts, rework, standby, and potential change events; coordinate commercial evaluations.

• Ensure technical alignment, readiness reviews, commissioning procedures, testing, acceptance criteria, and approval pathways are followed.

• Lead the resolution of complex technical challenges and cross-scope conflicts.

• Exhibit safety leadership and oversee energization, switching, LOTO, tagging, grounding, permits, and operational-authority requirements.

• Act as the primary commissioning leader with owners, utilities, executives, project teams, Engineering, Construction, Quality, Safety, Operations and Maintenance, OEMs, and other stakeholders.

• Provide decision-oriented status and risk updates to customers and senior leadership.

• Ensure comprehensive commissioning records, turnover packages, training, and closeout documentation are completed.

• Conduct lessons-learned reviews and contribute to process enhancements, resource planning, metrics, standardization, and training.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 8 years of progressive experience in commissioning, startup, testing, construction, operations, engineering, or project delivery for utility-scale electrical facilities.

• A minimum of 5 years leading complex commissioning or project-delivery efforts, including multiple concurrent projects, multiple technical scopes, or a similarly complex portfolio.

• Accountability for integrated scope, schedule, resources, risk management, stakeholder engagement, issue resolution, documentation, and compliance with contractual or commercial commitments.

• Ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence outcomes across organizational boundaries.

• Strong skills in business judgment, problem-solving, planning, organization, negotiation, written communication, and management of executive stakeholders.

• A valid driver's license and the ability to meet project access requirements.

• Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring employer sponsorship now or in the future.

• Advanced knowledge of utility-scale commissioning across PV, HV substations, BESS, SCADA/controls, communications, and utility interfaces.

• Proficient in interpreting EPC contracts, scopes of work, specifications, IFC drawings, interconnection documents, control narratives, OEM requirements, schedules, test requirements, and acceptance criteria.

• Capable of project and portfolio management in scope, schedule, resources, cost, risk, change, quality, stakeholder engagement, issue resolution, contract management, and documentation.

• Familiarity with HV and MV systems, electrical testing, protection and control, SCADA/communications, switching and grounding, LOTO, energized-work controls, and power plant operational interfaces.

• Ability to identify critical-path and cross-scope dependencies, formulate recovery plans, and make decisions based on incomplete information.

• A Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, project management, business, or a related discipline is preferred; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.

• Preferred qualifications include: PMP, Certified Construction Manager, NETA certification, electrical license, or other relevant technical or project credentials.

• Experience with EPC contracts, utility interconnection, commercial milestones, project controls, P6 scheduling and reporting tools, change management, cost forecasting, witness testing, and executive reporting to customers.

• Previous experience in coaching, mentoring, or supervising commissioning project managers or technical project leaders.

• Ability to navigate active project sites, climb ladders or stairs, access equipment areas, bend or crouch, and lift or carry up to 50 pounds.

• Willingness to wear required PPE and work varied hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends, or outage windows.
