Senior Backend Engineer, Ruby – Spec-Driven Development

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Poland, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Take the lead on backend features from initial product discussions through to technical design, implementation, rollout, and post-launch evaluation.

• Create workflows, APIs, and data models for agent-generated work items, implementation plans, durable specifications, and mergeable code.

• Establish evaluation and benchmarking systems to assess workflow quality, token costs, and success rates.

• Develop robust production systems utilizing Ruby on Rails and Python in conjunction with PostgreSQL, GraphQL, REST, GitLab Duo Agent Platform, LLM APIs, and an AI gateway.

• Collaborate with product, design, engineering teams, design partners, and users to define scope and negotiate trade-offs.

• Manage multi-person projects and convey decisions in an asynchronous, fully remote work environment.

• Provide mentorship to engineers and influence the technical direction within the Plan group and associated AI initiatives.

• Operate in short iterations, sharing progress through demonstrations and utilizing results and user feedback to inform future work.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience with Ruby on Rails in a large-scale production environment.

• Practical experience working with Python in production settings.

• Proven track record of leading significant projects with multiple engineers over extended timeframes, achieving clear user or business outcomes.

• A product-oriented mindset with experience managing features from inception to completion, including scope definition, trade-offs, user engagement, and post-launch learning.

• Full-stack development background with a current focus on backend technologies.

• Proficiency in reading modern frontend code and crafting effective APIs.

• Strong understanding of API design and SQL fundamentals.

• Experience in exploring AI-assisted development is preferable.

• Ability to work autonomously while also collaborating across various functions and regions.

• Capacity to provide technical leadership and mentoring to others.

• Familiarity with GraphQL, PostgreSQL performance at scale, or the development and evaluation of LLM or agent systems is beneficial but not mandatory.
