Senior Backend Engineer, Go, Tenant Scale – Gitaly

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Poland, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Develop GitLab’s Git data storage tier by creating reliable, secure, and high-speed repository access APIs and storage functionalities.

• Take ownership of technical initiatives from initial problem identification and proposal through to implementation, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing operational management.

• Serve as the primary individual responsible for projects, ensuring alignment among stakeholders, communicating progress and trade-offs, identifying risks, and driving execution.

• Lead the technical design efforts for distributed storage, management of Git repositories, and addressing performance, reliability, and scalability challenges.

• Collaborate with teams in Git, Infrastructure, Site Reliability Engineering, Dedicated support, and customer-facing roles.

• Enhance engineering practices via mentoring, thorough documentation, knowledge sharing, design evaluations, and code reviews.

• Manage operational responsibilities, including incident response, improvements following incidents, capacity and performance analysis, and handling customer escalations.

• Advance automation, reusable designs, dashboards, upstream contributions, and development/testing workflows.

• Address user emergencies, respond to platform alerts, and fulfill support requests, which includes regular on-call duties.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive professional experience in building, debugging, and optimizing distributed or highly available software systems within large-scale production settings.

• Proven experience in managing complex projects from start to finish, covering technical design, execution, deployment, and operational support.

• Strong skills in systems design with the ability to analyze performance, failure modes, consistency, concurrency, capacity, and observability.

• A history of influencing technical decisions and effectively collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders.

• Experience in mentoring engineers and enhancing designs, code quality, testing processes, and documentation.

• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

• Professional experience with Go or another backend or systems programming language.

• Experience in operating production systems and engaging in incident response activities.

• Familiarity with Ruby, Git internals, gRPC, or Git server infrastructure is highly preferred.
