Senior Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom, +6 more countries.

📋 Description

• Develop and manage APIs, microservices, and data pipelines utilizing Python, Django, Django REST Framework, FastAPI, and associated platform tools.

• Create service boundaries, API contracts, relational data models, and integration flows for intricate property operations.

• Generate ERDs and technical diagrams.

• Construct asynchronous and event-driven workflows leveraging Celery and Redis.

• Write advanced SQL, safely evolve PostgreSQL schemas, and enhance database performance.

• Assess, refactor, and phase out existing code.

• Create automated tests and incorporate them into CI/CD processes.

• Equip services with logs, metrics, traces, and alerts.

• Troubleshoot and resolve production incidents across services, databases, queues, integrations, and infrastructure.

• Design with a focus on security, resilience, performance, and data integrity.

• Transform product behavior into implementation-ready technical solution designs.

• Employ agentic coding tools such as Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, or similar to generate, refactor, test, review, and document code.

• Critically assess AI-generated code.

• Decompose specifications into manageable, reviewable changes and validate them prior to release.

• Enhance the team’s spec-driven development practices.

• Collaborate throughout problem framing, release, and production operations.

• Identify technical risks and trade-offs and suggest pragmatic improvements.

• Review code and technical designs.

• Mentor mid-level and junior engineers through pairing, code review, debugging, and design discussions.

• Proficient in Python and Django, with robust object-oriented design and software engineering principles.

• Strong understanding of API design, service-oriented architecture, distributed systems, and asynchronous processing.

• Advanced relational data modeling and PostgreSQL schema design expertise.

• Ability to create ERDs and technical diagrams.

• Skill in transforming incomplete product requirements into well-defined technical solution designs.

• Sound judgment regarding automated testing, observability, production reliability, security, and data integrity.

• Strong working proficiency with agentic coding tools and spec-driven development workflows.

• Capability to review technical designs and code, articulate trade-offs, and mentor less-experienced engineers.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in plain English.

• Pragmatic judgment in delivery.

• Over 6 years of professional software engineering experience, with significant commercial experience in Python and Django.

• Experience in building and operating Django-based services in production on AWS and Kubernetes.

• Familiarity with Django REST Framework or FastAPI, PostgreSQL, Redis, Celery, and CI/CD pipelines.

• Experience in designing and safely evolving complex relational data models in large, long-lived production codebases.

• History of working in cross-functional product teams with shared responsibility for customer outcomes and production operations.

• Experience utilizing AI coding tools within a professional software delivery workflow.

• Residing in the UK, Germany, Turkey, Poland, Italy, Spain, or Portugal, with the right to work in those countries.

• Availability to work with significant overlap with UK working hours.
