This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Take ownership of the architecture for core backend systems related to Last Epoch, which includes gameplay services, state/inventory services, player progression, and economy workflows.
• Design and develop scalable APIs and event-driven pipelines.
• Create high-availability and high-performance systems on Azure, encompassing data storage, caching, queues, and background processing.
• Establish C# backend engineering standards that cover design patterns, performance, resilience, observability, and security.
• Promote reliability practices such as idempotency, consistency models, graceful degradation, incident response, and fault management.
• Collaborate with game design and product teams to convert gameplay requirements into effective technical solutions.
• Enhance code and feature velocity through code reviews, architecture documentation, and reusable frameworks or libraries.
• Contribute to CI/CD and operational readiness by implementing automated tests, deployments, monitoring, alerting, and runbooks.
• Adopt secure-by-default practices, including authentication/authorization, secret management, least privilege, and threat modeling.
• Define service boundaries, contracts, data models, and evaluate cost/latency/consistency trade-offs.
• Implement durable messaging, backpressure strategies, and workflows that are fault-tolerant.
• Optimize hot paths in C# services and minimize latency through caching, batching, and effective data access techniques.
• Ensure that logs, metrics, and traces facilitate debugging and live operations; set SLOs/SLAs where applicable.
• Diagnose and lead the resolution of complex service, infrastructure, and live-ops challenges.
• Participate in an on-call rotation using PagerDuty.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in building and supporting online services with SLA requirements.
• Strong backend engineering background with expertise in writing high-performance C# code.
• Hands-on production experience on Azure, particularly with AKS and CosmosDB.
• Proven experience in constructing distributed systems and event-driven architectures.
• Comprehensive understanding of data consistency, idempotency, retries, and failure scenarios.
• Strong practical skills in API design, performance optimization, and operational excellence.
• Experience in designing systems that support real-time or near-real-time gameplay loops.
• Background in systems design with the ability to create maintainable and scalable solutions.
• Experience in mentoring engineers, conducting code reviews, and establishing technical standards.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills across disciplines.
• Preferences: 2+ years of experience in a game studio.
• Preferences: Experience in configuring storefronts for PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch.
• Preferences: Familiarity with PlayFab and Nitrado/GameFabric.
• Preferences: Experience with Unity and Unreal Engine.
• Preferences: Experience in optimizing performance across PC and console platforms.
• Preferences: Knowledge of ARPGs, action combat systems, or similar genres.
