This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Create, migrate, and manage systems for the ingestion, processing, storage, and lifecycle management of images, videos, and documents.
• Lead comprehensive migrations of outdated media-processing services to a contemporary platform.
• Develop data models, dual-write/backfill strategies, phased cutover plans, rollback strategies, and legacy system cleanup.
• Construct Kafka/event-schema-based consumers and producers to facilitate asynchronous media-processing workflows.
• Execute GDPR-compliant hard-deletion workflows across storage and CDN layers.
• Incorporate personal data detection, content integrity verification, and safe content transformation into upload and creation processes.
• Establish and maintain integrations with external transcoding and processing vendors.
• Manage webhooks, rate limiting, and scenarios involving failures.
• Draft on-call runbooks and alerting mechanisms for critical endpoints.
• Oversee service mesh permissions, adjust consumer/throughput settings, and address memory, latency, and backpressure challenges.
• Design and expand database schemas and GraphQL/API layers for media entities.
• Collaborate with trust and safety, privacy, and related platform teams to convert compliance and product requirements into pipeline modifications.
• Over 5 years of backend software engineering experience, preferably with high-scale distributed systems.
• Extensive experience in event-driven architectures (Kafka or similar), service meshes, and microservice-to-microservice integration.
• Proven track record of managing large-scale service migrations, including safe cutover strategies, backfills, and rollback plans.
• Strong foundation in relational/NoSQL data modeling and schema evolution.
• Familiarity with caching layers (e.g., Redis), CDC/change-data-capture pipelines, and cache invalidation strategies.
• Comfortable with operational responsibilities, including writing alerts, runbooks, and troubleshooting production incidents.
• Experience with media/video processing pipelines, third-party transcoding vendors, or content safety systems.
