Senior Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Design and develop highly scalable backend services, data pipelines, and integration endpoints.

• Collect product and engineering requirements, draft design documents, and facilitate technical discussions.

• Oversee the complete software development lifecycle from product requirements to architecture, development, quality assurance, and maintenance.

• Construct systems equipped with monitoring, alerting, dashboards, and observability features.

• Update product leads, engineering managers, and stakeholders on development progress.

• Introduce technologies and AI tools that enhance individual and team workflows.

• Manage ambiguity and obstacles while ensuring project momentum.

• Engage in scrum ceremonies, team events, and manager 1:1s as part of an international team.

• Provide and receive technical and behavioral feedback.

• Collaborate with the data platform architecture and integrations with distributed systems that support Apollo’s AI-driven internal workflows.

• Organize and structure data at scale alongside the data engineering team.

• Maintain ownership of the connections layer and distributed architecture that links Apollo to the wider ecosystem at high throughput.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 5 years of industry experience in backend development, including a minimum of 1–2 years in senior roles, developing large-scale applications.

• Expertise in developing distributed web applications at scale.

• Ability to write code that is clear, well-organized, and optimized for performance.

• Experience with database modeling (SQL or NoSQL).

• Proficient in using and designing RESTful services.

• Strong understanding of computer science principles, including data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design.

• Demonstrated experience utilizing AI tools for code generation, debugging, and productivity enhancement.

• Eagerness to keep up with emerging AI technologies.

• Experience in fast-scaling startup or high-velocity environments.

• Skills in communication, problem-solving, proactivity, teamwork, listening, creativity and innovation, organization and planning, ambiguity management, project ownership, and distributed web development.

• A BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field is preferred.

• Familiarity with GCP, Kubernetes, Docker, Mongo, Redis, Ruby on Rails, microservices, and machine learning is a plus.
