This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Write and report on engaging local education stories
• Balance swift news coverage with in-depth enterprise and accountability journalism
• Plan and implement long-term reporting initiatives
• Clarify the impact of education systems, policies, and decisions on local communities
• Ensure public officials and institutions are held accountable through thorough, impartial, and well-researched reporting
• Involve readers and community members in identifying pertinent stories and inquiries
• Collaborate with Chalkbeat colleagues and external news organizations on reporting and special initiatives
• Take part in TV, radio, and panel discussions
• Build and nurture relationships with educators, education leaders, parents, students, and community members
• Report stories that influence the community and foster change
• Represent Chalkbeat at public functions and across social media platforms
• Cover evening meetings and occasional events
• Minimum of 3 years of journalism experience
• Exceptional news judgment
• Quick decision-making skills in breaking news situations
• Capability to produce ambitious, agenda-setting enterprise journalism
• Strong interpersonal abilities, showing empathy and understanding while also engaging in difficult conversations when necessary
• Dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion
• Enthusiasm for education and Chalkbeat’s mission
• Familiarity with education is advantageous, but not essential
• Connections to the Indianapolis area are a plus
• Experience in data journalism is a bonus
• Skills in photography and social video are a bonus
• Fluency in a language other than English, particularly Spanish, is a bonus
• Eligibility to work in the United States, as Civic News Company is an E-Verify participant
